mares vs geldings. . .

Only ever got on with one mare and we only had her for a few months before I gave up riding.

I'm too highly strung and premenstural to have another female!

I've always found it easier to build a bond with a gelding....

I've had mares and geldings, and got one of each now. My gelding is the messiest most foul animal ever, truly disgusting and as daft as anything, but we have such a strong bond, he's so loving and a complete clown and tries his heart out, does everything I ask of him without question. He's a real mummies boy tho, and is a complete arse for anyone else to handle, and refuses to move when ridden haha

My mare on the other hand is very moody, greets everyone with ears flattened and teeth bared, will do what she wants and only that, no matter how much you persevere and how you ask her, or who is riding her. She can be much more gentle than my gelding tho. Both are very different personalities

I've had some wonderful geldings and some awful mares, so do have a preference for geldings, but never consider that when looking for a horse as they're all individuals

Hmm, interesting, I wouldn't agree with that generally speaking - and I did say generally!!

I would say that geldings are easy for anyone to get on with, but with a mare, you need a bond. I'd also say, when you've got that bond, then a mare will give you that bit more than a gelding

wouldnt swap my gelding for anything! the bond i have with flint is special, always had it with the geldings never with mares. its a case of you do or you dont

I've only ever had mares - they always ended up finding me when I wanted a new horse so its just the way it ended up.

None have been marish but I do think some riders are more suited to mares and some more suited to geldings. Mares dont really suit a more dominant rider, however a lot of geldings need one - thats how I see things anyway.

I suppose you have to go by personal experience....I've had 2 loan geldings who would do anything for you and taught me to jump, had 1 loan mare who was a physco and would just tank everywhere (I was too novice for her I think)! Had 2 brought geldings who were both my horses of a lifetime (Blue when I was a kid and Ty now). Had another Mare called Pip who was a nutter and bucked me off all the time - apparently drugged when we brought her

and another Mare called Posie - she was lovely mind you but I gave up riding shortly after so we sold her on.....

That said, it's taken until now for Ty and I to really bond. He now gives a little whinny when I leave him in the evening and watches me walk down the yard....he also gives me kisses and nuzzles. Int he saddle we've gelled alot more too. I think the time taken to bond was more due to him being a TB than a gelding though....

Well my first horse was a mare, we HATED each other, that totally put me off mares!! She was stroppy, wouldn't do anything i asked and loved my next door neighbour more than me coz he fed her polos

My second horse was a gelding and we had the most special bond ever, unfortunatly i had to sell him coz i got to big. Hence the search for another gelding!!

My second gelding although i loved him, was just as stroppy as my first mare and didn't give a hoot if he saw you from one week to the next. If anything he was probably happier being left in the field than having to deal with me everyday. He did love his kisses though but you knew once he had enough.

During this time i started to ride another mare, she was sooooo moody to begin with, a typical chestnut mare and we hated each other but after a few months we really started to bond, she picked things up so quickly and once we learnt to compramise she would do anything for me. If anyone else got on her she would turn back into the nightmare horse we brought. I loved her attitude to learning though and she started to turn me towards mares and even her moodiness started to disapear once she settled in.

Anyway i sold my gelding for various reasons and the search for a new horse went on. Because of the mare i had been riding and also my friends mare i no longer had a preference just as long as the horse did the job.

Well you guessed it i ended up getting another chestnut mare!!!! She has got exactly the same trainable attitude as the mare i used to ride and she loves her job. I never know when she is in season as she is happy ALL the time and she is also quite affectionate too. She even comes to call in the field and always looks pleased to see me. I have also found that both mares have bundles more character than the geldings.

So basically what i am trying to say is i prefer mares to geldings anyday but if i good gelding came along that could do the job i wouldn't say no.

Oh and my mare is A LOT cleaner than my gelding ever was!!!!!
