So . . got a four year old on loan with a view to buy. She is a very grumpy mare when in season. She is alos funny in the mornings if she is waiting to be turned out when you change rugs and pick her feet. She is not ticklish but just really grumpy and will snap at you, stamp her front legs and lift a back leg at you.

Other times she is sweet and cuddley!!

Never had a mare before so is this normal? And how is best to deal with it?
Idon't know whather to just ignore it or punish her. I have slapped her a couple of times on the neck when she has actually caught me with her teeth but she retaliates and tries to bite again!!
 
i swore i would never have a mare again, however have got a lovely little mare who has the occasional paddy but generally she is not too bad
 
My friend's old AA mare is a right cowbag when in season. She'll lunge at anything and anyone that passes her, she'll eat her way through her door when you change her rugs, and is generally an awkward grumpy mare. Friend stuck her on NAF Oestress and she is so much happier! She is still grumpy and snappy but not as bad, but then she's 19 and a bit stuck in her ways and habits. But she seems a lot more comfortable on the Oestress. We try not to slap her for being a cow as well, we will growl at her but not much more unless she's being dangerous.
 
I guess as long as she doesn't make contactbut just threatens I should just try and ignore it. She just gets so nasty!! I would rather just sort it out a behaviour issue if possible as she is so young. I know she is moody and uncomfortable when in season but I kind of think she should respect me enough eventually not to bite/kick me!!

Notr sure if that logice works with mares . .!!
 
Any mare that we have had that has been 'mareish' and we have had more that haven't been. Tend to get worse with age. Are mares in season at the moment or is this just her being moody?
 
My mare doesn't get mareish when in season normally, but can be funny prior to her 1st season in the sping (not a problem this year as it was so mild, she had normal seasons all the way through this winter). I found Oestress really good too, so may be worth a try.
 
i know a few moody mares and TBH they dont seem to change but if this Oestress is good then id give it a go and if it doesnt work then get rid! It also depends on how much you enjoy the mare to ride etc etc! If she is good to ride and you really like her then consider the oestress but if not then oestress might be an espense for a horse that you dont really enjoy anyway!
 
I really recommend global herbs supercalm, my mare didn't get on with the Oestress but really got on well with the above. Good luck

I really like her to ride, she has been fantastic to back and have just started hacking her. The grumpiness doesn't appear to affect her ridden work even when in season.

I think it is just something I will have to live with. I just wondered how everyone else coped with moody mares!!

I think it doesn't help that she is rather a dominant personality!!
 
Haha! I know what you mean - all the geldings at the yard are so soppy!

My mare is soppy one minute and nasty the next! Bless. her.

She is food obsessed though so bribery always works.
