Marius has laminitis

Have only just caught up with this - poor Marius and how worrying for you. However, sounds like you are tackling things properly and hopefully he should be feeling better soon. Only thing I would suggest is to consider soaking the hay thoroughly rather than steaming it. Steaming is great for getting rid of dust but not so effective in reducing the soluble carbohydrates which are a trigger for laminitis.

As you can imagine, OH deals with many laminitis cases and the majority make a full recovery.
 
My pony was in for 6 weeks; the Laminits Clinic advices 30 days on a deep shavings bed AFTER they are sound without any painkillers.
It really is a case of the slower the recovery the better.
Mine has been free of it for three years, and has never looked better.
With carefull management there is no reason why, even if they are more prone, they should get it again.
