Mark Todd Ultimate Stable rug - any experiences, good or bad.?

I would be interested if anyone has had problems with the lining of their Mark Todd Ultimate stable rug.

I bought such a rug 3 weeks ago..in a Derby House sale for £60 (normally retails at £90)

3 weeks later I noticed a 21" vertical split in the lining from near the strap fastening , and on closer inspection 2 other smaller tears also near where the straps originate.

The rug appeared to fit fine and has not been mistreated...although of course horse may have been rolling in the night.

I took it back to Derby House, as I cannot believe a quality rug should have this problem after 3 weeks...but they say there is nothing they can do as from a tel con Mark Todd say if the split is not near a seam it is not a manufacturing issue...I can at my own cost get it cleaned ( difficult without doing more damage as the lining is clearly showing and it will destroy the evidence) and send it to Mark Todd at my own cost...but they are unlikely to change their minds and will not refund cleaning/posting etc..

So while I am trying to find a Mark Todd contact no ( and decide whether to throw even more money away) I thought I would ask for your views/experiences.

Is it nylon or cotton lined. I've got an older version one (last years) which is cotton lined and never had any probs with rips. However I notice that they now come nylon lined. This tells you absolutely nothing but I was just interested in the material.
 
I have had my MT stable rug for about 5 years now - and still love it to pieces. The lining still looks to be pretty good on mine (cotton) - apart from where the bloody rats decided to chew it a bit - but tbh even after they have chewed it, the lining hasn't split any further.
 
I had one that i used for one season - loved it but unfortunately when i went to get it for this year, it has shrunk.

So if you get yours cleaned, make sure whoever does it does it on a cold wash - my 6'6'' rug that fitted a medium-weight 16hh horse is now keeping a 15hh lighter weight one toasty. She normally takes a 5'6 rug!

I did email the people I bought it from, and was told it happens if they are put in a hot wash, which I can't prove as it was sent away to be done.

In my experience MT rugs are superb and last very well. However, I have an under-rug and it has split above the belly fastenings - now there is no way I can blame MT for that, it is obviously the fact that my mare doesn't wear it well!
 
thanks for the tip....as I haven't got an under 16hh...just skinny, compact 16.hh+ I'd better be careful though to be honest I dont think I will manage to get anyone to wash in current state. Currently debating whether to try and wash in bath so not to damage further ( but know I will regret) / throw rug away or what.

I have always bought Weatherbeeta in the past and had no problems ...winter turnout and stable rugs that have lasted years and washed lovely with no size change.

Now think will avoid Mark Todd rugs in future as obviously not up to job

I pretty much only buy mark todd rugs and have found they wear better than any others I have had before. Bought a masta in a panic last winter for OH's new mare who was being delivered the next day with no rugs....it lasted less than 4 months, replaced it with a MT, and that is still going strong a year later on a BIG horse who lives out in it 24/7.
Sounds like you have been unlucky though, I've never had a problem with any of the 14 (god, I just counted how many and it shocked me!) MT rugs I have bought....all are still in regular use, some are 5 years old now!
 
I have had the same problems with this rug aswell. Small tears (which are now quite big) along where the straps are. I have also got the older version of this one and that one has been brilliant, had it for years now.
 
well I am not surprised when a thin rug goes around the strap fastenings after several months use.......I do think a 21" rip after 3 weeks even if originating at the strap fastening is unexpected.

anyway have tracked manufacturers down and agreed I will send some digital photos for them to look at.
