Anyone like to make any predictions about what the horse market will look like next year? I have a project who is coming along nicely but just doesn't feel like 'my horse' so I am considering selling him on. Is spring the best time to sell normally?

Usually spring/summer but this year being this year I’d be tempted to sell ASAP. From what I can see the horse market is still strong and nice horses are going very quickly. People have been telling us to sell ours quickly although various complications mean we won’t be.

I would sell now if I were you. I have friends who have been looking for months. An advert popped up the day after I lost my mare (very suddenly) and I knew with my head that I had to go and view as the new pony would have been snapped up immediately. I think the market is currently very strong. Good luck. xx

He's still really a project at the moment - intermittent mild nap and only really started in the school.... He is a lovely hack though. I also need him to be a companion when one of the others is worked so need the next project before he goes!

Looking like we might be under lockdown again next week, so it’ll be a moot point.

Otherwise I would have said sell now while prices are holding high and before you feed over the winter.

I'd actually do the sums quite carefully. Yes, you may get a good price for him right now - but you will be trying to replace at the same place in the market.
Also would a new horse come with extra costs for different tack, vaccs etc and time to get to know how a new hoss 'ticks' and whether your management needs to be altered?

Horses are selling unseen: people are particularly keen on safe hacks, looking at adverts currently. Sell now, you’ll get as much for him now as you would were you to school him on and sell in 6 months, I think.

As the market to sell is very good at the moment just be very careful who you sell to. There are a lot of novices wanting horses especially with riding schools shutting again. I know a couple of people who have sold horses for high prices i.e have taken advantage of buyers and are now in trouble for selling to people who can't cope. One sold unseen and didnt see the rider who lied about their abilities cause desperate for a horse. Sellers have to be responsible and say hey no this horse is not for you.

I am quite wary of selling now for the reasons mentioned - it's such a volatile market and I would want, insofar as is ever possible, to find him a permanent home. He's quite fashionably bred and a good looking horse so I'm hoping that when we've worked through his (fairly minor) quirks he would be the sort to keep his value even in a weaker market. I suppose there would be no harm advertising now though, I don't have to sell him after all. Food for thought!
