My yard supply micronised linseed as an extra we can pay extra for.

It always used to be Charnwood linseed in Charnwood bags.

The bags changed to clear a few months ago (I thought it was still Charnwoods but have realised label now says:-

WHM Pet Group
Driby Top
Alford
Lincolnshire
LN13 0BT

Which is a trading name of Marriages.

I remember from past discussions Charnwood and Marriages linseed are not the same. But I can’t find either full specification or starch levels to compare.

I think marriages is cheaper and higher starch? Can anyone help?

This is the Charnwood spec ( from https://www.charnwoodmilling.co.uk/horse_specs/micronized whole linseed.htm )

TYPICAL ANALYSIS

Fibre 7.00%
Ash 5.15%
Lysine 0.93%
Methionine 0.46%
M + C 0.81%
DE 20.00 mj/kg as fed
DE (Horses) 20.50 mj/kg as fed
ME (Rum) 18.54 mj/kg DM
ME (Poult) 17.70 mj/kg as fed
Calcium 0.23%
Phosphorous 0.65%
Magnesium 0.36%
Av Phos 0.20%
Salt 0.31%
DM 94.00%
Starch 3.70%
Linoleic 5.15%
Sodium 0.06%
Threonine (total) 0.90%
Hydrocyanic Acid less than 26ppm (after steeping for 3 days)

and this is the Marriages (from https://www.marriages.co.uk/downloads/Marriages-Linseed-Meal.pdf )

Omega 3: 21%Crude Protein: 21.8% Oil: 37.30% Crude Fibre: 17.6 Sugar: 1.99%
Starch: 10.9%

V different it would seem 3.7% is very very different to 10.9%

Never would have thought there would be quite such a difference.. My feed supplier also stocks a brand called Omega .. but according to my horse it is utterly unpalatable.. never found out the analysis .. but every time I order I make a point of specifically asking for the Charnwood .. which goes down a treat.

Additional points were - there's no sugar value for charnwoods so unsure if that's possibly what happened to the starch.
Also high temp cooking would be expected to reduce the omega 3 but it's higher in the marriages. (marriages cook at 120C, charnwoods use Infrared)

Thanks. I can get marriages though yard at £14.50 for a months usage.

Or buying direct it’s it’s £21 for 25kg

I can buy Charnwood myself locally at £22.99 a 20kg bag. Think I use a bag every 30-40 days.

Is it worth the extra hassle and slight cost increase to get my own Charnwood? (Yard were providing Charnwood until recently).

Thoughts appreciated.

Charnwood

Protein 23.00%,

oil 35.00% (omega 3: 18.2% omega 6: 5.3% omega 9: 7.7% others 3.5%),

fibre 7.00%,

ash 5.15%, lysine 0.93%,

methionine 0.46%,

M + C 0.81%,

DE (horses) 20.50 mj/kg as fed,

calcium 0.23%,

Starch 3.7%

Marriages

Omega 3: 21%

Crude Protein: 21.8%

Oil: 37.30%

Crude Fibre: 17.6%

Sugar: 1.99%

Starch: 10.9%

So I can cope with 10.9% starch for marriages over 3.7% for Charnwood, am I generally okay to feed marriages?

Or is there another benefit I’m losing?

Thanks

I posted a thread about this a while back, when my supplier swapped to Marriages from Charnwood.

My senior mare had the deciding vote, she refused to eat the Marriages linseed. I couldn't blame her, it smells of stale crushed digestive biscuits.

I changed suppliers and continued with Charnwoods.
