As promised I sent an e mail to mars coat king to ask if their products do contain a blade. ,if the teeth are referred to as blades..and here is her reply.
I rest my case.
Hi ( my name removed). bellasophia.
You are so correct. The last figure(s) is the number of ‘blades’. We tend to call the tool a rake which does tend to describe it and its purpose.
Mars has their form of furminator – I don’t like and only imported once. They do cut as they are very fine. When I am trying to explain why the distance between the blades is so important I compare the very wide gap to the very narrow. Would you use a very narrow e.g. 51520 on a dense heavy coat. No it would just run across the top and chop hell out of it. Again would you use a wide e.g. 558 on a spaniel. No it would be like using a wide tooth comb – nothing happening. Then of course there are the rest in between. I have found many of the official sites, incl Mars, recommend some quite fine ones, where I would go wider. I have often read remarks on Google where people complain about the cutting of the coat and I know it is because they are using the wrong one. Most sellers etc overseas have several brands and types of this product and as they don’t specialise, or maybe don’t care, they just don’t know the product. We have been to several World Dog Shows and lots of shows in the UK and have seen the attitudes of the retailers. As they can sell and never see the buyer again it really doesn’t matter to them. They will probably not have any more
to do with the customer and the complaints and negative attitudes end up on other forums – not with the seller.
The biggest trap is basically some terriers where you do want to strip the coat and so some of them use the 51516(20) , so it does cut. Also a lot of terriers use the 525.. Norfolk,Norwich Border,Griffin Brux etc where that size rakes all the fluff out and tidies up the top coat,
I only have a couple of resellers as I do find they don’t have the knowledge even though I encourage them to ring, txt if they want help. I have one big Dog bathing firm who sell heaps but they only use the 725. I can’t seem to get through to them that most of their customers are either too small for a double or too thick coated for this fine one and I have occasionally heard from their customers ( I exchange what they have been sold if necessary even when used)
New Zealand is a very small country- good and bad reports fly around quickly - and I am lucky my service and advice is so good once the breed clubs get hooked for their particular breed it is so easy to sell. The bigger clubs have their own Facebook pages e.g. Cavs, Golden Ret, Cairns etc and they also recommend to friends. I do stalls at dog shows as we do breed and show and also Martin is a judge so you can imagine people would be very quick to complain and return their Coat Kings if not happy.
Our auction site is Trade Me where not only can they ask questions but they also comment after a sale. Yes all good there, my only hate is the enquiries for crossbreeds (yes designer !! dogs are the rage and sell for huge prices – more than our pedigree/Kennel Club reg puppies. Their coats are a nightmare but I can sometimes get photos and also offer refunds/ exchanges.
When Carolyn talked about opening her site we wondered how it would go, however we are very pleased dealing through her and I find I can sell well and be very helpful through her. With having lockdowns in 20 and 21 business was quite busy and as we have had few shows, where I would sometimes have a stall, I have been very glad of her site.
Now that Martin has retired we might get around to having a web page which would also help.
Thank you for your enquiry – I hope I haven’t bored you. I have enjoyed rabbiting on about my loved Coat Kings
Best regards
