The names in the starting orders make for interesting reading - Onassis and Casiraghi amongst others, although the Gucci Masters were never going to be full of lowly plebs

Unsuprisingly, there are other shots of Martina Hingis jumping which are decidedly more flattering!

Oh do shut up!

She was jumping a 1.15m and 1.25m class, not a celeb class

I don't think anyone looks beautiful falling off, and I'm sure many eventers hang on to the reins.

This forum is so damn b*tchy, it does not reflect well on us when anything appears in the proper press, all the forum does is pick and point out faults.

Well said Cotswoldsj. That was no small class. Her boyfriend (I assume they are still going out anyway) is a showjumper and I knew she had a strong interest in showjumping but hadnt heard of her competing previously.
Anybody who falls off and holds onto the reins will be doing the same to the horses mouth - most people are just lucky they dont have the daily mail following them around looking for them to make a mistake. I dont see why people have to whinge and make a deal of it - Ive seen many happy hackers who hang onto their horses mouth on a regular basis - not just when they fall off - he who casts the first stone and all of that... I think people are far to quick to pick holes in other peoples riding on this forum.

Not fair and so typical. Hands up who'd like pics of their falls all over the 'dailies' and more so when they are unlucky moments and your riding is normally spot on (and over 1.15/1.25m)

Hmmmm, thought so - nobody!

When I used to ride for a dealer I would get yelled at if I DIDN'T hang onto the reins when I came off!

Yeah i've always done this automatically to stop the horse running off - naughty me!! I'd love to see some pics of people falling off gracefully and not infringing on the horse at all!

On a lighter note i had no idea she was that into showjumping!

Ditto keeping hold of the horse, its something almost innate I think. Better a couple of gobs in the teeth than horse running off and doing itself far worse damage..... (thought unlikely in this situation I admit

I used to be told always to hang on to reins when I fell off - which I used to do until I was dragged under the horse and stood on, resulting in breaking my wrist! My advice is now to let go!

What she said.

These pictures are miliseconds in the fall, she wasn't dangling from her reins but the pictures make it appear so. I am sorry but most people will hold on to their reins if they fall off. It stops you having to chase your horse around to get back on!!

He's not going to go very far, is he?

I try to hang on and never succeed.
BTW, for those who are criticising MH for hanging on to her horse's mouth, have you NEVER been left behind yourself when your horse takes a flier?? It happens.

I had to look after reading the comments. Don't see what's wrong with that at all - pics always make things look bad when, in reality it happened in a few seconds.

I'm sure we've all been there (well I certainly have!). I always naturally hold onto the reins if i fall, it's just natural instinct I guess. I don't think there's a right or wrong about it.

as others have said, i'm sure we've all been there and felt totally embarassed- i feel its an automatic thing to try and hold on to the horse for it (hopefully!) to stop! thats how it always was with me, right or wrong!!! if this was an unknown person and not someone in the public eye then i doubt there would be the same level of criticism about her!!

I know

, but I meant in general out CC or hacking.

Last time I hung on when SJ I snapped a rein

and still ended up face down on the arena floor. With horse looking down at me (not running off).

Thank god you said that. I was wondering what the problem was. Maybe I should give up riding

agree she must of been dangling for all of a split second, some how I think the horse will get over it!

it's def not my natural instinct to hang on when i fall off. my horse's last owner broke her neck doing this - the momentum created by hanging on swung her under the horse's feet and he trod on her neck. let go! esp in the safety of an arena.
