After some advice please. Just wondering as I have a sharp youngster, if I took him to his first dressage competition would I be able to have him in a martingale until the fizz is out of him in the warm up. I’m thinking Riding Club and affiliated dressage. If not, I can have a neck strap, can’t I?
You can wear bandages and take them off for the test, so what about tack?

No for martingale in warmup or test according to BD rules....don't know about RC, but think they follow the same?

Yes for neck strap warmup and test

Yes for bandages/boots in warm up, but remove before test.

If you ask the organiser, the some may allow the martingale if you are going HC, but technically not allowed.
Try asking for early times, so you can get the bounce out before others turn up?!

If you think you need it you could compete him HC the first few times and explain to the judge when you go in the ring. Or just take him and warm him up (paying for 1 test as a thank you to the organisers) and go home.

In theory, for BD, you are not allowed a martingale even if riding HC…..some organisers might turn a blind eye, but unlikely that a judge would.

It is always worth asking tho’?

My top tip is do a walk and trot. Ask to go first if it’s first class then arrive early so you can lunge if needed before anyone else turns up and I quite often walk them round the arenas with a lunge line without going in the competition arenas. Nobody seems to object if ask organisers as not being ridden. Then I normally give them a break and get on but as had a bit of a spin on the lunge just tend to focus on them being relaxed and taking it all in.
