I found my mare stopped the head toss when “fresh” when I changed her bit, she would do it out hunting when I had a contact, changed the bit and she stopped, in her case I went to a single jointed on professional advise and she’s been fine.

I have used a chambon very successfully on a young horse who was difficult to hack and used to get his head so high, you had no control.

The benefit from the chambon is there is no backwards pressure on mouth or nose so horse is never pulled BTV even when it's in active use.

I had mine loose enough that it only came into action in emergency situations, I threaded it through my neck strap so it wasn't a trip hazard and it meant I could keep riding forwards when naughty pony started manoeuvres!

The chambon should only be used for lunging but the de gogue which is quite similar can be used for riding.

Nope you can ride in a chambon... And lots of people do.
If you Google, you will see- I think one of the first articles that pops up is Di Lampard talking about riding in them.
