im sure this has been done to death but is it ever ok to jump in a standing martingale, i dont think it is.

but clearly these people at show yesterday thought it was. now there was this young lad on a big bay tb type with a standing martingale on and yes he was trying to do the practice jump, and poor horse kept knocking it down and then he would smack him for kncko=ing it down but imo if he had been able to stretch his neck he would of cleared it no probs.

also there was another girl on a white arab again with a standing martingale on, well actually it looked like a running martingale which had been double up through noseband to act as a standing one, also she kept knocking jumps down, but didnt see her smack horse. it took alot for me not to say summit.

I had to do an emergency procedure to swap my running one into a standing one out drag hunting once as had no brakes at all, he still managed the rest of the jumps absolutely fine - it probably wasn't as tight as a normal one would have been though.

it shouldn't be a problem. Horses poss more likely to have poles down due to chucking their heads in the air and making life difficult for themselves.

it wasnt so much the martingale that annoyed me but the fact he smacked the horse when he knocked a jump down but seemed to me he couldnt use his neck properly hence knocking them down.

But in your OP you go on to say that it took a lot for you not to say summit (sic) to the other person you saw with a standing martingale who wasn't hitting their horse.

Ditto the above. I have jumped one of my horses in a standing and he very rarely had a fence down. I would be more worried about bad riders using severe bits and draw reins, there are far nastier gadgets than a standing martingale.

oh yeah sorry meant she wasnt so bad, took alot for me not to say summit to the lad who was hitting horse.

i don't like them cos i've seen a 6 year old jumped in one smack my boss in the face when it was removed cos she was reaching for the martingale. it took him a good few months to get her to start dropping her head and forget to rely on the martingale. where was the show btw
