any one know if there is a difference between a bib and a running martingale?? ive seen a nice bib one i like but didnt know about them. at the racing yard i worked at they all had them!

Bibs are pretty common on race horses as they serve the combined function already commented on. By the way, I was taught Irish martingales are to prevent the reins flipping. If you don't want to "open" the rein you just don't - why would a piece of equipment be necessary?

I've seen them every now and then on event horses but by and large they aren't that suitable for riding horses because they limit the rein action and they are heavy/cumberson enough to affect the feel on the rein. A few paranoid people like them for jumpers because they fear the horse getting a knee through the "v" (again, seems much more likely in a 'chaser but whatever) but I think correct adjustment and well set keepers should do the trick.

Bibs are best used for horses which tuck their chins in to their chest to stop them getting their teeth / bit etc round the straps on the martingale. Some horses deliberately grab hold of them as well and this stops them doing that. Quite handy for cheeky ponies!!

Makes total sense with the grabbing at the straps. That said I was sitting on a race horse once that was fussing and somehow got his nose behind the bib . . . that was a pretty terrifying moment.
