Went to YHL today and saw Mary Wanless do a demo with a winner from a competition in YH.
I really found it a very interesting talk and it made so much sense what she was telling the lady to do and explaining things in such a clear way!
I am seriously considering going on one of her courses in the summer as she isn't based to far from me!

Has anyone been on one? or know more about her work?

Thanks for reading!

she's got a few books out and they're well worth the reading! A lot of the stuff she talks about in them is easy enough to start to put into practice yourself with the aid of a mirror and a chair!

I saw a demo a year or two ago and would love to go on one of her courses, but she's miles away from me. :(

I missed Demo's today as my friend was too busy shopping. have read her book and love it. I too would like to go on one of the courses especially as I tried the equisimultor today and loved it

My instructor for the past year and a half or so has been a RWYM (Ride With Your Mind) instructor, and I've honestly found it really interesting. For me, personally, it's helped both my riding and my confidence immensely. Different techniques work for different people, but I've definitely found it helpful and would say it's worth a look. Haven't been to one of Mary's demos for years, though.

Hi

My instructor is Becky Chapman at Ashen equestrian centre (i think she had her simulator there today) - a ride with your mind coach. The whole concept of ride with your mind is fantastic for people like me. I had lost my way totally with my riding, had got thoroughly confused as to why it felt wrong but the traditional fixes (ie sit up, heels down) just weren't making it feel better. I've not had that many lessons but i am miles ahead of where i was and have a far better understanding of why the horse underneath me is responding the way it is. My back is now pain free when riding (this is why i HAD to do something and led me to Becky). I thoroughly recommend either seeing Mary, or a RWYM coach or just an instructor with an interest in Biomechanics. Its truly fascinating. I also recommend the books, but my first ever lesson made me realise that a book, just like the internet, does not compare to real life instruction and experience.

My advice is do it! And really believe in it and go for it - you will reap the benefits. It will feel wierd, but as Mary says 'if you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got'.

I feel so passionately about it that this is the only subject that will draw me out of lurkerdom to express an opinion - i want to spread the word! :)

Have fun and if you go i'd love to hear an update.

I had a series of lessons 20 years ago with Mary, and have never forgotten anything she taught me. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the replies!

I did buy her book "Ride with your mind essentials" just having a quick flick through now and looks really easy to understand, even has a troubleshooting section!
I think I will book a course in July, she is running a weekend one for £245 with own horse which I dont think sounds to expensive it includes:

A 1 hour flatwork lesson with Mary shared between two people or a 45 minute private session with another instructor on day one.

Second day a group flatwork lesson.

Dismounted lesson of at least an 1 1/4 hours taught by Mary, which includes discussion, video feedback and exercises.

Includes DIY stabling with hay too!

Also optional extras of simulator lessons and sports massage for horses!

Definately think it will be beneficial for me I dont consider myself to be a bad rider just not overly confident and I find the technical jargon hard to grasp!

Roll on July! Better get me and my horse a bit fitter! :D

Most instructors tell you WHAT to do, but not HOW to do it and there is a lot of misinterpretation. Mary has analysed what exactly it necessary to do to ride correctly. It feels very strange, but the results can be amazing.

I've taken lessons from both Mary Wanless and Becky Chapman, and highly recommend them both. After years of 'sit tall, heels down, relax' lessons, they make so much more sense -- in fact, when I came back from Mary's my usual instructor said 'there! that's what I've been trying to get you to do'. Hah. Stopped taking 'lessons' from him after that, and now go to Becky, who's nearest.
