I am interested in doing as massage course for horses, specialising in acupressure.
I do a bit with my own horses but would like to get qualifications so I could practice professionally.
Do you have to train on humans first?

You can train to be an equine body worker without doing humans first. Try searching for Equine Body Worker qualifications. How much demand there is for an equine massage therapist who isn't a physio I'm not convinced about :o Nor do I know if you can do accupressure without being a qualified vet. You may also wish to look into shiatsu, which is based on pressure points.

To get qualified in equine massage isn't cheap, I would advise you to really assess the demand for it before committing to a course.

You will need a degree in something to do with phsio or sports therapistunless your a doctor to be able to do accupressure im sure. Im a sports massage therapist and I'm also aiming to do my equine sports massage but its alot of money to do and if I didnt have the large horse rider client base that I already have I would bother

To do acupuncture you need to be a qualified vet, for acupressure I am not sure, I don't think you need to be a vet. I do quite a bit on my own horses, but not other people's.
I have looked at equinenergy, but they are in Essex. Does anyone know of any courses further north?

MiCsarah- How did you become a sports therapist if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking about doing a course for humans anyways.
Thanks

QR- Dominobrown, I'm in Scotland and travelled to Wales to do the course there. IIRC there's 50-80hrs pre study before the course (they send the pre course study guide that you have to print. Its fairly hefty.). The actual course was 7 or 9 days with a study day inn the middle. Then there is 90hrs of post course work and an externship to do; you submit this for your qualification.

I've also been on the MDT-C course at the Oxford college but didn't rate it at all. The EBW course was much more thorough and in depth.

Good luck whatever you decide.

For a good massage therapist who isn't a physio, there is a good demand, my friend is always fully booked and is excellent. She charges 45 per session (35 for friends) and works her butt off, if you do the right courses, and are good and well respected, you will have no problem making a living out of it. If you wanted more info, you could pm me and I could give you her details. I'm sure she would chat about which courses she did etc.

I have a friend who does clinics and one to one sessions. She has trained as an animal physio (does a lot of dogs and horses) and she will show you massaging techniques etc. if you would like her details pm me and I will send them to you. I can vouch for her being a great physio I use her as do many others I know. For clinics she has been known to show up with her painted welsh pony to show all bones and muscles etc.
