My horse is on box rest due to tendon trouble in one of her back legs. She is coming back into work and when its cold she seems to really stiffen up in both her back legs and as she has eggbars it means she slips everywhere. Anyone have any ideas to make her loosen up massages or any other ideas?

If you haven't got a clue where to start, may I suggest you buy a book on Massage? I don't know if they do DVD's or anything on this subject.

Is there a therapist local to you who could come and give your horse a session and perhaps give you tips on how you can continue to help?

Sorry, I really don't know much about it, I am just thinking aloud as it is often easier to look from the outside in.

Could you Farrier put anything on the shoe to help with traction?

Just some thoughts.

Hi, anyone can massage lightly without causing any damage, as long as you leave the injured areas well alone. You could gently massage the tops of her gluteals and hamstrings etc, but the best thing would be to put some bed socks on her. Not literally, but the leg warmers for horses to keep her legs warm. This should help with the stiffness as like you say, it is when it is cold.
Remember tho that when you have massaged, you will need to walk her around for a few minutes or she will be stiff in the morning, just like us humans.
I hope she gets better soon.
