Please help. I've taken my 15.2 cob barefoot (over a year) and he can still be footy with his fronts, particularly after a trim . So I've been looking at hoof boots. He has enormous almost completely round feet 157mm! It seemed to me after extensive research on the saddlery shop that boa's would fit, but apparently they are being discontinued so I can't get them in his size! This sort of exhausts the possibilities for such a big foot! Any suggestions or personal experience with clodhoppers would be gratefully received. I'm thinking I'm going to have to put front shoes back on because its affecting my enjoyment when riding, and most importantly his way of going.

Hi Moobucket sorry to hear your cob is still footy after a year. Sorry to be tedious (but it has to be done). I'm assuming you've done all the usual; diet review, thrush etc.

There other makes of boot that go to 157mm or bigger.

Cavallo Simple 157mm x 157
Easyboot Epic and Bares go to 192mm x 195mm

Hi LucyPriory,
Yes I fret about the footiness. He's 14, I've only had him for the last 2 and by all accounts his diet was a bit ropey before. He's on Purefeed balancer and biotin supplement. He is a little over weight, but it difficult to deal with this while he is footy. He has had reoccurring thrush although his feet are currently fine. I worry that there may be some residual internal thrush causing the soreness, so I have searched out Thrushstop which supposedly doesn't damage the healthy tissue (I started to worry that I was over drying his hoof).
Thanks so much for the boot makes. I'll search them out. All advice gratefully received.

Ok - for me the Purefeed is way to high in combined sugar and starch at 18.7% I aim to feed 10% or less.

Try a lower sugar/starch feed such as Fast Fibre with a high quality mineral mix such as Forage Plus Winter Hoof.

Provided your cob is healthy you are unlikely to need to feed biotin.

At 14 it is not to early to consider PPID and if he is overweight has he been assessed for Insulin Resistance?

Ah ok. Eeek. Will check them out!

He's just has his vaccinations done and had a free blood test for cushings so I am waiting on that, but will ask the vet about insuln resistance when she comes back.

Thanks, you have given me a lot to think about.

My cob also has enormous feet but I have Cavallo boots and they are brilliant. I contacted an Equine Podiatrist who recommended them. I have her contact details if you would like them PM me.
