Can anyone help?
Our three yr old gelding (who is currently out of work recovering from an injury) has a massive hock. It has been like it for several weeks. It came up overnight when he was in the stable. He is not in any work and has not been doing anything for several months - due to his previous injury.
He is not lame on it and when it takes his fancy he will charge round the field. Hosing has not helped reduce the swelling which is soft and a bit warm. We cannot find any signs of infection getting in .i.e. a wound hole/thorn/puncture and are really puzzled by this. The vet has been consulted over the phone and he says not to worry...
I have now purchased a magnetic bandage which I am using on and off.
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?!
 
Has he capped it in the stable (basically banged it hard against the wall).

If he has then it will just be swollen for a while and probably cause very little pain.

Unfortunately it may not go down fully........

Don't mean to upset you, but it could be.........
 
Look at www.gamereadyequine.com the system has a specific treatment wrap for the hock which I have found extremely effective for reducing hock swellings. PM me is you would like more details as I offer treatment/hire through vets :-)

Don't know how he did it but the puffiness is all round the front and inside. From the back angle it looks almost normal!

echo henners... I would advise bandaging the hock (24/7) with a stable bandage in a firm figure if eight fashion and keeping horse in for a week ... if it doesn't go down and stay down get the vet out!

tbh joint swellings in youngsters in particular should be taken pretty seriously and a vet called out to investigate in the first instance...
 
Personally I wouldn't do any bandage. If you get it wrong, or it slips, it can do far more damage than any small amount of good. I would get the vet out if you are worried about it, then you will have a better idea of what you are trying to treat.
 
to be honest I was dubious about bandaging so firmly, however having had a filly with OCD and used a special bandage supplied by the vet, I think yoy can achieve far more good than harm... if after a week the joint hasn't decreased in size, that is the time to re-evaluate the situation...
