Masta rugs - hate them or rate them??

Just bought a HW masta stable rug, was a bit worried after reading about them being huge on horses etc etc...

well my girls 15'1, 5'9 and she's TB X Knabstrupper and it fitted her like a glove - really pleased! Here's a pic of her in her new p'js ;)

I have had a few over the years for my youngster, they were a good fit Trak X, were always waterproof and stayed in one piece.

They are doing an outer with liners at the moment that I am very tempted by.

Mine was nice in theory, fits pony well but when he grazes in the field the neck rides up and leaves his neck bare, and then in wet weather water seeps in all the seems at the front, and the material isn't as waterproof as some other makes I have had. Its OK but I wouldn't buy from them again :)

Had one for my 15hh Sec D, most of the time it would be slipped halfway around him and it rubbed all his chest. Got a Shires 'cheap' l/w turnout and it's the best rug for fit & longevity we've ever used... now all of mine have a Shires.

:) ❤

Don't like them, they don't fit my little cob properly around the neck/chest and they don't seem to last as long as my weatherbeetas/rambo rugs

Love the older ones - I still have the first turnout rug I ever bought for my horse eight years ago, a Masta, in daily use every winter! - but the newer ones are poorer quality with cheaper neck fastenings and seem to rip more easily. Shame as I liked the fit of of the old models, deep with generous neck and shoulder, ideal for cobs.

Have one its 12 yrs old. HW turnout used every winter, hate the blinking thing with a passion, its so heavy, but it just wont break so cant justify getting rid of it:(

Hate the LW, didn't fit and ripped. (Newer - now no longer!)
However, the MW is brilliant, and I need another! (older, can't fault it)

They still sell the expensive ones, the cheaper ones are poorer quality, more if a budget range. The expensive ones are waterproof, don't move, last forever and take a lot of abuse. The fit is great on a cob and I like the adjustable neck straps, they're good for chunky horses who get strangled by standard neck covers when they lower their heads to graze. My last one did 5yrs on a horse living out in a field with barbed wire fencing. I love them.

Rambos are great too, never leak or rub, even if you use the wrong size. Amigo I find too cheap and nasty for turnouts, but the stable sheets are smart. Weatherbeeta I can take them or leave them. I agree with Welsh, the Shires (even the cheap ones) are fantastic. Last forever, good fit, don't leak and don't move even when you've only got one of each strap left!

Don't mind their stable rugs and fleeces, but I would never waste my money on their turnouts. They don't fit anything, are NEVER waterproof, fall apart after two minutes wear, and slip dreadfully.

Wish that i'd seen this earlier.

Just yesterday bought a Masta Avante T/O.

It's absolute rubbish, supposed to be 6ft & 170 gram fill. Well it's tiny, thin & as others have said, looks like a mini skirt even though i've had to put it on our 14.1 pony (was meant for 15.2 ISH!!!)

Love them. Near enough all our little cobs rugs are Masta & they fit him perfectly. I can see why they wouldn't fit others though as he's a funny shape being 14hh, wide, short backed with a short but very thick set neck :D

It's been a good 6-7 years since I bought a masta rug, but have turn outs and stable rugs that are still going and fit both my old TB mare, my currently retired cob x mare and most recently my new TB gelding... So have to assume the quality has gone down as I always really liked them...

Only ever dealt with 2 & hated them so much it put me off forever! Stable rug that was so heavy you could hardly lift it to throw over horse(horse that wore it was only 15.2hh!) & ridiculously deep, when that horse was sold the owner gave me it 's rugs but I graciously declined the stable rug! Around the same time they introduced the flexi-neck turnout & I got one for my youngster, rug was rubbish as it just sagged at the flexi bit & only came 1/2 way up the neck!

So sorry to read this :-( How annoying!

I've just bought a cheap Masta turnout for my gelding as the grey ripped his Rhino all the way down one side. I was a little worried as I've not had a Masta turnout before and it's only 600d, but I had to buy something pronto.

Anyhoo, it's the black half neck turnoutmasta (see pic) and it's much better than expected, it even fits his little shoulders. Ok it's not very deep, but he doesn't need a deep rug, so that's fine. I've only had it for a week, but it's been fully tested as it's rained buckets and then been -5 at night. I'm glad to say that so far I'm very pleased - not bad for £30, in fact a total bargain. :)

*Please don't rip it naughty grey, I haven't fixed the Rhino yet*

Hate them; gaping necks and heavy when wet. Got the stable rug on the bed to keep me and dog warm! Horse is tucked up in his lovely Lavenham combo and very toasty!
