Hey guys, i have just ordered masta rugs for my new boy, a heavy weight with detachable hood, but someone at the yard then told me that Mastas are rubbish
Rubbish, sorry. I work on a livery yard so have had experience of a range of rugs, and Masta are firmly at the bottom of my list. They are built to fit make-believe cardboard box-shaped horses. Rubbed my own pony to bits (as did her Shires, and that one also leaked like a sieve). I now buy only Horseware, Fal or Premier Equine.
I think they're ok on chunky little ponies - my section b has a turnoutmasta XT that looks like it was tailor made - it doesn't move & it doesn't rub.
However, the SAME rug on my 16hh youngster didn't work at all.
He's a 15.3hh m/w type. Do you think i should wait till i get it and try it on or just order something else and return it when it arrives? It looked dead nice in the photo lol!!
I would never buy another. The linings on all of mine came away in the same place (along the horizontal seam 1/3 of the way up the rug) after a very short time. The linings also frayed and split very quickly.
FANTASTIC. We have used Masta rugs on many animals over many years, and not encountered a single problem. No leaks, no rubs, no slipping. They just seem to go on and on.
i've never had a problem with them but i've got a chunky boy so sounds like they fit the chucky ones better. if it doesn't fit you can always send it back. xx
A new one I bought was rubbish - sorry another rubbish
It ripped as the seams, tri vent plastic bit fell off and the rug wasnt sown underneath (Not a good finish at all) the plastic thing so leaving a gaping hole. Front buckle strap just came off not stuck to fencing or anything poor stitching etc.
Although I have an old style one of theirs which is still going much better than their new ones!
I wrote and told them it had only been worn about 3 weeks they werent interested at the poor quality of their rugs.
I love them! The only things that really fit melly beautifully! Im thinking of getting a stable rug and a LW of theirs too. I have a detachable neck too and that goes on any rug. They are excellent! x
Bit gutted - guess i could send it back!! Didnt really want to fork out on a pe or horsewear as he's only 4 and will need a bigger size of rugs when he takes a stretch! Any other good (not too dear!!

Horseware/Fal 2nd hand on ebay every time for me!!
Found Masta's slipped on my TB as he's not broad enough for them to sit right. By the time I walked him to the field they'd moved round. Others on my yard swear by them though for their chunkier breeds. In my opinion you cant beat Horseware rugs, rate them 100%!!!! and if you can't afford the Rambo's which are the mutts nuts, the Amigo's are very good too.
They used to be good many years ago, but the couple I bought in the last few years disintegrated very quickly. Have found the Funnell rugs cheaper and more durable.
Iam sorry I didnt quite understand whether you ment Masta stable rug or Masta turn out? We have a Masta heavy weight quilted stable rug its about 5 years old now and wearing well wash after wash still looks good. As for turnout never had a Masta, we have a Weatherbeater Heavy Combo with neck, its brill no rubs, no leaks and never slips, and very reasonable price. (there was a catalouge in horse & hound this week.)
bumblelion - PMSL!! Once he has reached his height i will certainly be investing in some nice horsewear rugs, but at 4 i think he would rug me out of house and home! Didnt want t get proper 'cheapy' as i thought they would probably be rubbish but very mixed masta reviews on here! Maybe thats why they were on equestrian clearance ha ha
See how it fits. If you don't like it can't you then send it back? i have a masta stable rug for my horse and it is fine, although if memory serves me correctly the first one we bought for him (the same as he had now) the lining all ripped. He'd only had it 5 minutes really so we took it back and got a replacement. the one he's got now (just checked with my mum) he's had for years and it is still looking pretty good!
However, I have never tried their turnout rugs as since discovering Rambos years ago we haven't looked back. I did buy a basic Masta turnout rainsheet for mine and feel it slips back too much - the rambos are cut a lot higher up the neck. I think though if you horse was fairly broad it would fit better. Try it. Horses are different shapes and sizes. Many people on here like weatherbeetas - I have to say i hate them, they never fit right and slip far too much!
I have an old Masta rug (think it's four/five years old) that is still going strong, is a fabulous fit, waterproof and still looks like new. She still wears it every day in winter and I don't know what I'd do without it. She is a cob so an awkward shape and it fits like a glove.
I have newer ones that are cut to a different (and rubbish!) pattern that have ripped, the linings have come away and hang down and the straps come off. The triangle plastic bit at the top of the shoulder dart is the first to come off, then the linings fall down, then the chest/neck buckles come off. I especially had problems with a lightweight sheet one - it lasted about a week before it was trashed.
Sadly I would never buy another one, although I would pay its weight in gold for another of the old style ones!
I have two for my 3 year old, as like your horse she's growing and will need an entirely new size of rug for next year. I have had no problems with it except the hood has a gap where it attaches onto the rug. It rubbed a little on the shoulder but a bossys big sorted that out. Its never leaked, moved or ripped and she is nice and warm in it.
There no point spending £100's of £ on a rug for 1 year if you can spend £30 for the same job. She will get a nice expensive rug in a few years time when she had stopped growing!
I would never buy another Masta turnout rug. It's the only turnout rug I've ever had that leaked from day one, and was wet through to the inside and took ages to dry. I reproofed mine after a couple of weeks of this, but it was never any good for wet days.

i have a section D and they fit him awful. the one i had of my old horse kept opening up on the bottom seam. i also ways buy weatherbeeta rugs now

My weatherbeeta's fit fine but within a month all my inside was ripped and frayed. Mark Todd all the way!
I am going to slightly go against what the others have said, I have a big chunky cob so in theory the rugs should fit, but that's where the difference ends, Masta doesn't fit him, they like everyone else has said, slip back so obviously it doesn't just happen to slim TB types and believe me my boy has big shoulders and chest!
Also the neck covers end up with a big gap between the end of the neck and the start of the rug as the bloody thing slips back. I am going to try and sell my 2 X Mastas at the yard, someone may want them, to finance the Weatherbeetas I have had to get recently, which are reasonably priced and fit my horse very well. Thankfully (which seems an odd thing to say) he has grown out of the Mastas so I have been obliged to get some new rugs this year, thank god!
If I could afford it then I would go for Rambos or Fals, must keep doing that lottery!
Just thought though he does have a Masta stable rug which has been fine oddly enough, although it's very old and I bought it second hand off a friend so it was prob made before they became Cr*p or prob made in China or something Like the Hunter wellies and Ariat boots!! Unfortunately you don't always get what you pay for!
Hollycat, that was my thoughts too, the rug cost £40 so not the end of the world if he outgrows it by next year! I have a bossy's bib so shouldnt have anyh probs with rubbing. Guess i'll try it on over a fleece when it arrives - if its a decent fit i'll hang on to it, he can make do a few months lol and if it looks rubbish i'll send it back and order something else, trouble is all the other cheapies are rubbish! Maybe second hand is the way to go!
