does any one use there rugs ?? I have a very broad chested Cob x who currently has a mark todd that I must admit fits him ok. I was looking at the masta and was wondering what they are like

Does any one else use on a large broad horse ? or generally do they stand up well ?

Also, which is the best one as a heavy weight

Thanks Guys

I like the fit of Wetherbeeta rugs on my IDs. They fit lovely round the chest but unfortunately on my big mare, who takes a 7'6, it looks like a crop top!!!! She is an exception to the rule though!

I particularly like the Taka as a heavyweight. I have had a high neck one for three winters and although I am ashamed to say it has never been washed or reproofed in that time, it still stands up great to our wet & cold Cumbrian winters and has never leaked anywhere

The crop thing is the problem I have with my lad, he looks like he is wearing a miniskirt in the rambo !!!! sold it to yard !

is the taka a wheather beta ? (sp?)

The Taka is by Weatherbeeta and they come in all different weights, necks and colours now - not as cheap as you would think for what is known to be a "cheaper" brand but I wouldn't change it for any of the more expensive makes.

I think mine is one of the original versions as it is a few years old now but another thing I like about this one is that it has a nylon lining rather than a cotton one so it doesn't absorb nasy smells!!

I think Masta are terrible, they don't seem to fit anything, rub like mad and split easily. I have used Weatherbeeta for years and think they are great, esp on big horses. Their new designs seem to be a bit longer (less like miniskirts) as well.

Thanks guys, I must admit, I like the MTs for the deoth they seem to have , my lad is very broad and pretty deep in the girth aswell. He also has a huge neck which has caused a LOT of problems in the past.

May be I should stick with what I know, Mark Todd.

this is him by the way in case you wonder

The checktech ones fit my ID well & they do an extra deep cut too (looks like a long dress on Jim & he's deep through the girth). I've had one of mine for three winters now, never had it cleaned or reproofed, but it still stood up to days of heavy rain without leaking & despite a lot of rough play it only has one or two small snags on it.

I don't have any pics that really show his build well but these may give you an idea although he tends to look less substantial in ridden photos.

We have used Mastas on big chested animals for many years. We have never had one leak or rub or anything else. Excellent rugs.

A friend had a lightweight Checktech Masta leak but Ive had no probs and have found them good on deep chested horses as they come up so big and actually reach the bottom of their tuns! not fat, just deep girthed!

So I buy them unless am going for luxness.

I do hate the garish colours though, and why are there no green rugs around, I like calming colours and they suit my horses but everything is pinks and purples yuk.

Masta are the only rugs have found to fit my girl both width and depth all the others look like mini skirts and pull on her shoulders plus they have a better range for her as she take's 7'3/7'6. She is a big built girl. I have had no problem with rubs or leak in fact she has just got a new one, the check tech and I LOVE it. Perhaps some people have had experience's with rubbing on smaller built horses??
Masta all the way for me!

Stick with MT's, I have had both and wouldn't buy another Masta as it leaked and you get a gap between the rug and neck cover when they graze (never have this problem with a MT).

Its the one turnout-rug make I refuse to ever buy! I had one turnout rug a couple of years ago and it was dreadful! It fitted fine, but it leaked like hell and very quickly got totally shredded and it was on a horse who'd never even snagged a rug in his life! Awful quality IMO. They look a lot more modern now so maybe they're better, but I'll personally never buy them again. For the price, Id rather have a WB.

I agree with Magic_Mincepie (and that doesn't happen often

I bought a MW Masta turnout a couple of years back - strange shape, didn't fit any of mine properly (from Shire x TB to 3/4 TB it managed not to sit right on either of them).
It leaked like a sieve from new....so I had it professionally washed and reproofed...for this winter....only to find it started to fall apart...belly straps fell off, the wither pad fell off...the point where the leg straps attached....fell off...
I was so pi$$ed off with it at this point that someone gave me a Weatherbeeta as a replacement!
Now I can't bring myself to give it away or sell it because I know how crap it is....and I'd think of someone's horse shivering in it...
