Hi there, My mare has got mastitis, Could she be in foal? She has had 2 minor seasons. Does anybody know anything bout mastitis.

he said she shouldnt be in foal coz she had a season but cant understand why she got milk. he coming back out before lunch to check her again. Ive only had her 3 months so dont know if she been to stallion before i got her. where i got her from they said not, but she was imported from holland so we could of got confused with the language difference.

Is he going to scan her?? Is there any possibility that she could have had a foal on her prior to you buying her??

he didnt want to scan her coz he finks that coz she had a season that, that means she not in foal. My sister in laws mare has got a foal so i fort that maybe my mare seeing the foal for some reason made her start to produce milk. but i didnt fink that they would get milk without having a foal or being in foal.

I used to own a mare that got mastitis as a seven year old but then she quite often had milk and had never had a foal as i bought her as an unbroken 3 yr old from her breeder.
She later went on to have three foals in her late teens after retiring from competition with no problems at all.

thats good to know that your mare had foals after, we got a ewe thats got mastitis & she cant have no more lambs so i wondered if it was same for horses. coz did want to breed from her

We have an older horse in the yard who was NOT in foal and got masitis at the end of last year. We had to 'milk' the yellow pus stuff out and she was put on antibiotics. She has had foals in the past.

We don't breed from ewes once they have had mastitus because they do not produce any milk once they've had it.
I have had mastitis 4 times with different babies and I still produce milk and had more babies,,lol lol
I'm pretty sure horses arnt like sheep tho... Is she having a phantum pregnancy...??

not sure bout the phantum pregnancy, she could be. a few wks ago i saw my 2yr old trying to suckle from her & i didnt fink much about it coz he's abit dull at times. She was meant to come into season last week & hasnt done. Thanx for putting my mind at ease.

OH's mare gets it and she isn't in foal and hasn't been for 8 years!

Our vet has seen a few cases this year and says once they've had it once they tend to be prone to it - our mare first had it in November.

Hers seems to tie in with seasons to a degree - if seasons run normal course - not mastitis, if weather suddenly chills off when she is mid season, she drops the season and hey presto - mastitis.

First time it cleared up with a course of Norodine , now we have Norodine at home, start her on it and if not gone down in 24 hrs dash to the vets and pick up a bottle of penicillin to jab her with

Howey, make sure your vet specialises in horses! Okay, you can get up off the floor after that laugh, seriously now, when we lived there (until very recently), I had the senior vet from a local practice up to one of my mares who had choke and he was convinced it was grass sickness! The rural vets in wales tend to specialise in sheep and cows and know just enough to cover their backs about horses! So it depends where you are in wales - anywhere near Carmarthenshire? PM me if you are and I'll give you a name of a very good equine practice. Reference horses seasons, really odd thing happenend to my mare when she was first pregnant. She had a full season - I panicked so looked load of info on internet. turns out, if mare produces alot of oestrogen and embrio cant absorb it all then it manefests as a season. Insist on having your mare scanned - it wont do any harm.
