Mastitis

Is it possible for a mare to get mastitis if she's never had a foal before? If she has it will it affect her if she does have a foal, would she be prone to getting it again?

OH's mare has had it 4 times this year and hasn't foaled in 7 years - vet advised us once they've had it once they tend to be prone to it - didn't ask about breeding though

my old mare got mastitis and as far as we are aware she had never had a foal unless it was before she was 4. My mare got mastitis just before she foaled. It never affected her foal apart from that she could only feed from one side and she never managed to get any milk out of the other side of her bag.
Ive been told that shes more likely to get it again if we breed again off her
