I have been thinking about this recently and trying to work out how livery yard owners actually make any money from this business! I know horses are a bad idea if you are trying to make money! However, by the time you have included the cost of rates, insurance, feed, bedding, maintenance costs, wages, etc how can a livery yard owner make any money, even if they own the property outright?

If you say a full livery yard owner who charges approx £80 per week per horse, how much in costs would they be paying?

It's very difficult to make money as a YO. We have about 10 full liveries and they pay for our own 5 horses but to make money my sister teaches, thats where the money is.

A girl near me is renting a yard and doing liveries, is managing to pay herself, but she does it all herself, including riding out 5, she also does freelance clipping and work riding, and she is a trained chiropractor so does that freelance too.

Up until recently she was also working 35 hours a week in a local business (and managing to go hunting)

I don't honestly know how she does it all

I make just enough money to feed and clothe my horses, fertilise, take haylage and thats it. My OH has to go out to work to pay the mortgage etc, and Im down the docks three nights a week for extras

oh I can help with this one (makes a change!!) ... www.manage-my-horse.com. My trainer found this site when he was in Germany of all places and it's brand new and my aunt has her yard on it and its helping her run her business and keeps track of costs and feed costs and stuff and its free!
Its brill and actaully all my friends are on it too as its for everyone with horses to help you keep a track of everything but it has a specific area for business stuff. You'll love it we all do and i went on tonight and it's the feed section has a dodson and horrell huge advert on helping you sort your feed out.
