Iv been eyeing up the mattes saddle pads for a few years now and I think its time to bite the bullet and order one, Im just apprehensive as they're so expensive and iv not actually seen one in the flesh! Are they worth it or should I look at another brand? Recommendations where to buy one would be a great help too :)

I love them, but as I ride Western I'm probably not much help for you with which ones to have as I have the big western pads. But they're excellent bits of kit and last for years.

Look up Steph Bloom (saddle fitter) - she definitely rates them and sells them. She sometimes has end of lines etc at bargain prices on her FB page. She's on the forum but I don't want to fall foul of selling rules by tagging her!

I have a western one with adjustable padding. I love it, have had it for years. The sheepskin is removeable and washes beautifully, comes up good as new. It was expensive but well worth the money IMO

If you're looking at Sheepskin, then I like the Horse dreams/Christ Lammfelle even more but not sure they are any cheaper. Mine was a bargain in a sale.

I also have a normal Mattes Saddlecloth which I use for dressage which is nice and has lasted well and with an 18" saddle was big enough which some brands weren't.

I have an all brown sheepskin half pad with pockets for shims too, used about 4 times and in v good nick. Happy to sell if anyone wants it and include a good number of shims too. Fits v nicely under a 17" saddle.
They are around 200 new, will do for 100 Inc UK std postage.

I have been using their sheepskin numnah with pockets for shims. They're brilliant. I would LOVE a pink one. Might treat the pony to one if she EVER comes fully sound.

If you look on ebay / facebook market place you can often get lucky with Mattes pads, and shims second hand for a fraction of the new cost. I do think they are unsurpassed as pads.

Agreed they're good - https://www.horsedream.co.uk/collections/numnahs - but they are very limited in the options available. I like a numnah/saddle pad with shim pockets in preference to a half pad, and of course the colours....(the photo of the bindings I attached had wholesale prices on it, thought I might get into trouble for that!)

Looks like they don't do the one I have anymore which is s full cloth with half sheepskin.

I have a Lavinia Mitchell saddle fitted with a prolite pad and I prefer the flexibility of using that with different pads than having the shims integrated but I can see the appeal of having it in one pad.

I already had the pad and went through the pads (and girths) I would use when the saddle was fitted.

I have the Mattes Correction Pad, it is good.

I bought the wrong size first, used but in good condition, large when I should have got standard. I could sell the big one if anyone is desperately after one. I only haven't because I hate the process of selling stuff. I think it's Champagne, if that's a colour and I haven't made it up.

Champagne is a colour (posted a colour chart above), and yes, they are generous, I have size charts in the FB group and you can find them on the Mattes website.

Just remember though, as with all pads, if it has top trim then that limits the space, they do not size the pad up to allow for it, and the saddle should never sit on the trim.
