It's basically a bareback pad and an expensive one. I've worked with Mattes a long time and their products are generally fabulous, but I am not convinced this is the best option for this use, and for this amount of money.

This has got a 'base support' with changeable gullet though, which I assume is what brings it into the 'saddle' price bracket, rather than just a pad

There are a lot of different kinds of bareback pads, some are more of a treeless saddle, some more numnah+stirrup loops and surcingle. I've not seen one in the flesh, it might be LUSH and well designed and certainly has more to it than the CL, but there are treeless companies making really good bareback pads, with all sorts of choices of model to suit the rider's pelvis and leg position/discipline, sheepskin seats an option, for about half that amount.

How much?!!!! 😂

I have no words.

To be fair even the coloured pad that's included would retail, if it was available separately, for over £300, a treeless saddle pad with sheepskin "crescent" lining is £306 IIRC and this has more structure and work in it, comparable to a western pad. I still think there are better options than Mattes for THIS.

How wet does you're bum get when it rains? and how do you dry the pad?:p
Ah, good question 🤔

@sbloom I'd be interested to know what is out there that you consider better. Is there anything that you can use stirrups with? I have a CL pad which I love and it has the thigh roles which I think put me in a better position. I wouldn't use stirrups with it because of pressure points, but if there was anything out there that was equally sumptuous AND stirrup friendly I'd love to know.
