Hi, am taking on a 23 yr old on loan and have to sort insurance out- she is currently uninsured but the owners have asked me to insure her. Their main priority is to get about £1250 back if she dies and for her to receive non-major vet treatment. Who do you use and how much please??
Thank you all xx

Hi

I have my 25 year old TB mare insured with Petplan. She is 15.2hh and insured for £1200. The monthly cost is £11. I have had so many vet claims in past 2 years and they have always paid out (as long as due to accident or injury) without any problems and paid within a matter of days of claim going in. My excess is £115.

Enjoy your new horse!

Hi Thanks for that. I just got a quote actually from petplan and was pleasantly surprised! The only thing i's not sure on is the vet fees part says "injury" rather than illness all the time - Does this mean illness is not covered? I think this may be the case with all elderly horses?
And its actually a little pony for my 8yr old. we lost ours last summer and at the moment she is away for half term-No idea of whats waiting for her

I've got my two (18 and 17 year old) covered with petplan. I think they only insure for illness up to 20 years of age so unfortunately you'd only get injury cover now. Lets hope they dont get ill for you!!

Hi

Most insurance companies will only cover injury for over 20 year olds. Petplan will give full cover (at a higher premium!) to cover till 25 years if insured with them before the horse was 20. My mare despite her age thankfully has not had vet claims through illness they have all been injuries. If an insurance company does cover for illness then you will find the premium will probably double or triple!

Your daughter is in for a lovely suprise when she gets back!!
