So, one scoop of allen and page calm and condition weighs 1.5kg dry, add two scoops water which must at least double the weight, then add another scoop of chaff (alfa a) 500g, which by my calculations makes 3.5kg in just one feed?! I always thought you should limit each feed to 2kg. So currently feed half scoop of A+P with 1 scoop Alfa A.

According to instructions on the bag can feed up to 6.5kg per day (dry I assume), how many times a day do they expect you to be able to feed your horse?!

Or is it do not feed more than 2kg of concentrates in which case the amount of water and chaff is irrelevant, although this would still add up to four feeds a day needed minimum.

Thoughts please

Hey you,

I'm pretty sure the 2kg is dry weight.

Mr K has 1 scoop of C&C plus 1 scoop of Alfa-A and also (depending on work load) can have up to half a scoop of cubes in his tea. For brekkie he has 1 scoop of C&C plus half scoop of cubes (I omit the alfa a in mornings cos he takes to long to eat it!).

I have to admit that in the evenings when I pick his bucket up after adding all the water to that it seems so heavy and I get the guilt pangs re: 2kg max per feed. Anyway, Kuma's looking just great this winter on that and is much more chilled out too.

I haven't seen the 6.5kg max a day on the bag myself but that would be very expensive!

Good luck x

I thought it was more that the volume of feed should be no more than half a black water bucket in size...

I thought volume was a deciding factor .... apparently a horse's stomach is the size of a rugby ball and if you give them too much in one go then it can spill over into the hind gut and cause colic

......

Hard feed can cause colic when excess amounts reach the small intestine. Water, however, will travel on to the large intestine and get re-asbsorbed into the blood stream.
