What's the largest stallion you could safely put to a 13.2hh welsh mare? Mare is very cobby, you could park a land rover between her legs :-)

She is an 11yo maiden. Wanting to get a foal that will make 14.2-15hh. I've been looking at stallions around 15hh-15.2 welsh d/cobby types. Would this be to big and as such is she better off going to a small tb type to get the height but a finer animal?

Foal will be for me, not for sale. Mare is a fine example who does well at ridden and in hand showing as well as competing in all PC events.

So my question is how big can we go?

Probably would have more responses posting in the breeding section :)
I'd say something under 15hh and not too chunky.
But I don't know much about breeding :o

How is the mare bred?
What you can get will depend on what is behind her as well as what is behind the stallion.

My parents bred my old pony Cloud (13.3hh Medium build show jumper) to a 15.1hh warmblood stallion when she was 9 years old. The stallion had a tendency to be 'dominant' (his foals turn out more like him than the dam) and we got a nicely sized foal with great conformation and an easy night time birth in her stable. Everything went smoothly and Dream (the filly) now one and a half is expected to make 14 - 14.2hh. The only thing I would add is that you might like to breed by artificial insemination (AI) as if the stallion is quite chunky the mating might be difficult. Also, my mare had bred one foal before, but it was when she was four years old and it was a very difficult birth and the foal almost died.

My vet advised me not to go more than a hand bigger for a maiden mare.

This was a very special mare to me, so I did not want to take any risks and followed that advice.

My baby is actually quite wee, but I think that is down to my maiden mare as the stallion can throw big foals. Breeding is a lottery.

Maiden mare will always throw slightly smaller than subsequent foals so unless your prepared to havr another of dams height maybe rethink although ide say 14.2/3 max for her theres always the chance foal will make sires height plus (my anglo has exceeded both sire and dam by 2inches and still growing?)

I have had a 13.2hh maiden foal two 14.2hh's by a 15.1h stallion. She is a very substantial mare though, and her grand dam was 14.2h, although her dam finished 13h.
In all but one of my mares, the first foal is always daintier. They're not ridiculously fine boned or anything but that bit lighter than subsequent foals.
The exception to this was a Connie mare I had, her first foal had plenty of substance. As did all her foals.
If you know your mare's breeding you will be better able to tell, eg heights and type of grand parents etc, paying particular attantion to the damline. Some mare's produce themselves and some don't so if you can find out about other siblings to your mare, her dam, and those siblings you can better figure out what you'll finish with.
