maxacalm horse calmer

I have tried MANY calmers and only one I found works for mine is from hackup.co.uk

He has a powder one daily and if required stepfree which is a liquid calmer I use to hack out, its AMAZING ! Works in minutes

I hadn't heard of hackup - but having looked at the website I wouldn't be happy to use it in competition. (Not that you are necessarily OP - just that we do compete!) I know they say it contains no valerian but they don't go on to list the ingredients in full. Its isn't NOPS approved which means you can't guarantee the contents (Think Jock Paget using a calmer which was not NOPS approved). Although it does say it is safe to use up to the competition date - it very carefully does not say safe to use in competition which suggests there may well be something there which would not be approved. Absolutely not a problem for everyday use of course - but reasons to be careful if competing.

The calmer which everyone does say works is anything with Valerian in it - one reason why it is also a banned substance for competition. I don't have experience with MaxaCalm - but we do use MaxaFlex which I find totally brilliant so I would tend to trust the brand. I'm not personally convinced by the loading periods on many supplements - but that probably depends on your horse. Hopefully someone on here will be able to give you more of a personal experience.

Hi guys, have tried valerian. Didnt really touch him. He has explosive spooky episodes..i almost need to get in his brain to tell him its ok. Which is why i chose maxa calm as it contains Ltyrosene which i think is supposed to generate more seratonin? Sorry if spelling is naff 😂 In company hes a saint alone he lacks confidence having being left wild until the age of 4 then me buying him and that all changing he is still very dependant on his herd. And still not 100% confident in me which i try and work on alot on the ground. Alone hacking hes nappy and stops. In the school there are monsters in every post, bush, grain of rubber..its really disheartening! I just need to take the edge off. Try and lesson his flight instinct to stop the running away. He may on the other hand just be a big bolshy bas#@$d...who knows...

Sorry only just saw your question. Mine has a hoof and calmer combined supplement daily.

I use stepfree if I hack out as he's very reactive. I give 25mls in syringe in his mouth bout 10 mins before a ride, it lasts couple of hours. It honestly really does work. And as mine is 36 and we don't compete I don't give a monkies.

If you ask Alex at hackup he will tell you whats in it. No valerian I know that much

NOISYGIRL...how long have u been using step free ,had u tried any other calmers? Have been using Naf Magic without success have heard good things about hack up but believe it can be expensive...

I bought a calming supplement and the step free was £74 ish with postage. Only ordered the 1kg and the 500ml step free but if you buy the 5kf tub and 1l step free its much cheaper. I have read on different threads on here that it works out cheaper per day than other brands. I will let you know how we go with it x

Naughty native - have tried magic worked a bit but not much. Used shots they worked a bit.

tried Lincoln valrian worked fir a while

Equimins and few others with no effect.

I have been using stepfree to hack out for a good few months I find it excellent. It really does work . He is not sedated just chilled.

I bought middle size tubs and large stepfree and spread the cost over 3 months.

Alex well all of them are very helpful

Noisy girl how big is your horse? Height and weight? Gave mine 25ml this morning and it had little effect but not sure if i gave him enough. Hes 17'2 and weighs 670kgs? Im going to give havk up a call when i get home. To see about dose x

Be aware that calmers that actually work can reduce the horse's ability to learn and process memory (as well as reducing reaction time, which can be dicey in some competitive horses). This doesn't mean they might not help, but just that the horse might take longer to learn what you are teaching it.
Note that there are not many calmers that have had proper research trials done on horses. Most rely on 'anecdotal evidence' i.e. they market them on the basis that someone else says they work. Again, this doesn't mean they don't, but be aware that some of the effect can be because you 'believe' it will work (placebo effect). This is okay too, but can be an expensive way of giving yourself confidence!!
Check also that they have listed side effects; all products have side effects (even things like Vit C and garlic), so a reputable product should give you an idea of what could go wrong (particularly with long term use e.g. garlic can lead to anaemia in less than two months of use).

Mine is bout 15.2 450kg

have a chat with alex as I know you can give it 3 times a day in 25ml shots but as yours is bigger I would think you give more

Alex is back he says :

We have 12hh ponies requiring 75ml to get the required response and 18.2hh horses needing only 20ml, so it really isn't a size thing. It's more of a personality thing and it's legal to use up to 75ml per day. Trial and error is the only way.

Aw brilliant thanks i really appreciate your help. Did give him 50ml today and he did seem a bit better will keep playing around with it :) thanks x
