I've just ordered a 50ft lunge line for the hyper dog. He's not reliable to recall off lead but the 30ft one I have now isn't long enough for him to get a good chase of his ball. (He hit the end of the line a couple of times last night, and I felt awful.)

30ft is fine... but I'm not sure how well I'm going to manage 50ft lol! It's bright yellow, so at least I'll be able to see it.

Could you not get him a 'swingball' so he can just chase round and round all day? :p :D :D I think you are very brave, not sure I could manage 50ft of lunge line with a horse let alone a hyper dog :)

That's the same length as mine - watch out for knots forming, especially around your ankles :D It's not actually as far as you think though, especially when you've got a dog that covers the ground.

I'm pretty good at wrangling the 30ft one. :D I did trip over it in the dark last night- black lead on an unlit field is not a clever idea!

He'd do anything for a tennis ball, so a swing ball type thing would be awesome for him!

Have you got it attached to a harness rather than a collar? Makes a huge difference to their safety and comfort, especially when they hit the end of it.
I used to walk my boy everywhere on a 50ft line when I got him because he was deaf and we needed to proof a really good checkin before he could come off. Rubber gloves over cheap fleece gloves are invaluable in winter!!

Yep, it goes to a harness. He hits the end with some speed though, so I want to give him a bit more freedom. :)

I have nice leather gloves that are comfy and keep my hands safe.

I know the feeling, they can pick up some speed in 50 ft!! The rubber gloves were for walking when the line is soaked and muddy, in case you don't want to ruin your nice leather gloves ;-)

Ah, good point! Will invest in a pair (though if it's muddy/wet, I usually come back covered anyway!)

He's only on a 30ft line right now. I'm hoping the 50ft will let him chase his ball without hitting the end. I can't throw very well (I have a crap shoulder) so 50ft should be plenty!

I've looked after dogs that have no recall so couldn't run free but needed the exercise, and found that some time in a stream or lake (or a hydro pool) really knackers them out. Obviously, you need to be able to see what's in the water so the line doesn't get caught on debris or in weeds etc. The downside is, they get super fit :p

Do you mind my asking if you've any idea why your dog is hyper? Just wondering.

He's a Jack Russell/Pom cross. He's just super high energy. I try to get him to the beach as much as I can because he really likes it!

If he is that focused on the ball, just use two? Or use the line initially to help bring him back for you to restart the game and eventually phase it out.

Phasing the lead out eventually is the plan. Never thought of taking two balls- I'll give it a go. Thanks!

I have two of everything!!! When he was younger we did swapsies, didn't get the second ball chucked until he was back with me and the first ball was released. Second ball visible then slowly not visible, so I wasn't bribing him by dangling a ball and hoping he would come back for it.
Gradually phased the second ball out so that he activates me and I am part of the game, not just a ball dispenser :p
You can do the groundwork in the house at home with lots of swaps so he gets his head around it/understands what is required, IE you don't get the second 'active' ball until the first one is released. More fun than sitting on the sofa watching soaps :p

Heh, I'd love to sit on the sofa and watch soaps! :)

I'll pick up some new tennis balls (he goes through them like mad) and give it a go. e's very good about coming back, and will sit/wait until you throw the ball. It's just if he sees something he goes hairing off after it!

Lucky lad to be taken to the beach!

Have you considered his food? Does he get commercial stuff or raw? I've fed mine raw for donkey's years but a lot more people are doing that now and finding improvements in their dogs' behaviour or that they're less hyper and more able to concentrate.

Do you also play the sort of games at home where he has to really use his brain to work out how to get something? I hide some of my dog's food around the house at different levels so he has to use his nose/brain/muscles etc. to get to it. I've also got a kiddies tunnel and pile up some of his toys to jump over. I throw his ball so he has to jump over his toys and go through the tunnel to get his ball and then do the same to get back to me. Sometimes I use some upturned flower pots to hide a treat or toy under one of them, then shuffle them about and he has to work out which one has the goodies.

...and sometimes he just gets to watch dogs and horses on tv :p

But really, I think we need piccies of your lad. A JRT x Pom sounds adorable :)

Yep, I play lots of thinking games with him. He gets fed on Applaws food. He can be a bit of a fussy eater but he seems to like that! Food seems to make no difference to him- he was fed on raw for over a year and was exactly the same. :)

Okay, photo overload time:

It's the perfect length. He gets a good run and he's not hitting the end of it chasing his ball.

He looks adorable, and I hope that you have lots of fun together, with the help of that new long line.

A somewhat pointless remark, and I know that you said that he is a Jack Russell/Pomeranian cross, but he looks like I imagine that a miniature Finnish Spitz would look like, if there was any such breed.

Hope your shoulders are in good order! What breed is he?

We believe he's a Pom/Jack Russell, but no-one is quite sure. We do know his dam is a very well bred Pom who had a visitor while she was in season. Her owners blamed the Jack Russell next door! :)

He's always reminded me of a Spitz. He has a great big bushy tail just like one!

Ah, I've always wanted to try a 50ft, never even considered getting a fluorescent one! I'm always tripping over the 30ft black one I have, can't believe I never thought of a brighter colour!

I like extendable leads for smaller dogs, I have a miniature poodle and he is great on it. He's a well behaved dog anyway and comes back when I call, the main reason I keep him on the lead is because I used to have a whippet who was attacked a few years ago by another dog when offlead in the same park, and I know I shouldn't but I get very nervous when I don't have him within reach. He does get to run off the lead though, I have a good sized garden and my dog walker lets him off when she takes him to the park and he is as good as gold.

I've got to say I don't know if I agree with extendable leads for bigger dogs. I walk a labradoodle for a lady I met on Tailster on weekends, it was a way of getting my Hugo used to being around bigger dogs. I would never dream of having Duke (the labradoodle) on an extendable though, he is only seven months but is so big already, plus he has a bit of lead aggression and just gets so excited when he sees a child or smaller dog. I like being able to have him on a short lead for control while he's still training, he'd run circles around me otherwise!
