This will serve no purpose other than having a good rant.
I have rented my yard for 12 years. It an arrangement I can live with as I have to pay cash and they leave me totally alone. The YO is not at all horsey and does NOTHING in the way of maintenance or upkeep. I do it all and pay for it. Every other year all the wood is painted with wood preserver, fence repairs, etc all paid for by me. Perhaps I am a fool but I like it to look nice. If I do complain about anything he just says that I can leave.
Anyway, last year the main power cable under the ground failed and I was left most of the winter with no lights or electric. It was hideous mucking out by torchlight - much respect to those of you that do but with 5 horses it was horrible.
He promised that he would repair it this summer............. can you see where this is heading........
I repeatedly asked about it all summer and his answer was always that he was busy doing something else but that he would do it.
My friend who is an electrition said that he would put in a new cable from the house to the barn (YO barn not mine) as that is where the problem is. YO absolutely will not have it that you can lay a power cable above ground. It is several hundred yards but could easily run along their garden fence boundary so would not be a eye sore. He says its is dangerous.
He has got the lights working again by spraying the box on the outside of his barn with WD40. He now thinks that this will do but I have a strong feeling that as soon as it turns wet again the lights will trip the switch thingy again. This trips the switch in his house and I will end up with no lights again.
When I started renting the yard I had lights and electric, my rent included this. This year he put my rent up by £25 a week - first rent rise in three years - but now I have had no electric since last year and no lights. By electric I only ever used it for a kettle or clippers. Not really very fair is it.
I know I don't have a leg to stand on, he would just say if you don't like it then leave. I accept this but the prospect of facing another winter with no lights is just horrible. I would have found another yard or at least tried but he kept saying that he was going to fix it.
Sigh!
So there you have it, I thought a rant would make me feel a bit better but it hasn't as I still face a depressing winter.
By the way yards in my area are few and far between, they are very hard to come by so moving to another is not as easy as its sounds. Especially as it is 5 mins away from where I live and 5 mins away from where I work. I know I will end up having to put up and shut up and will do, just under protest!!!!
