Could you donate parts of your horse(s) for research if you were to have him/her PTS?
Im talking legs/head etc eg for dentists, vets, farriers etc to show people problems at demos.
Can you also explain why you would/wouldnt

I'm not sure about heads/legs etc but i know someone's horse who had cushings and the horses brain was used for research after it was pts. In theory the idea is quite good to help with research for horses but i don't knowif i could actually bring myself to allow that to happen to my horse. I know when they are pts, they are just a shell and not really your horse, i wouldn't like the idea of them being sawed apart

im thinking more local, not specifically organs. Just that weve been discussing donating legs to a barefoot trimmer for disecting etc and my dentist held a talk and he says he asks people if could have the horses head for demo/training should the horse be PTS

I would like to say yes, but I said maybe.

It would depend on the situation and circumstances were I suppose. It would be nice to be able to do it but when emotions are running so high at a time like that you are rarely able to make such decisions.

I said no because my pony is my pet and viewed as one of the family, I've had all mine cremated and have their ashes returned to bury.
I'm sure they're not really crying out for body parts for those uses unless they need them to show a specific disease/rare disorder as I'd have thought they'd be easily available from the knackers yard...

all my horses are classed as pets and part of the family but id like to think that if it could help someone out then I would give them the necessary bits.
I have been asked if 2 of my horses' legs could be given due to complexity of the problems they have, when they are due to be PTS. I know for a fact that they will give a lot of information to the person who has requested them and in the end she will be able to hopefully deal with a lot of other problems like this and maybe change the way she works with them. On one of the horses we are talking from the knee down as she only wants the fronts and on the other she would like a diagonal pair and would like from above the hock down.

Why would they want to go to the knackers if they know of a horse with a specific problem, as they wouldnt have a clue if they just go to the knackers yard? surely?

I assumed you also meant for general anatomy and common problems. If it were for a specific illness that my horse had then I may consider it if I felt confident that it would play a real part in researching a cure/treatment but not if it would just be used as a "prop" to show what the problem was. Even then I don't think I'd do it if it meant that I could not dispose of the rest of the body as I wished.

sorry L_M - didnt really explain properly (heads a shed today)
The reason the person wants the legs is due to boney changes which is now affecting the feet and lower limbs which is affecting the way she is treated eg feet trimming, movement etc. We want to know whats going on internally as we can see all the external problems

Although I am Organ Donor registered and have no problem having my body used when I am dead, I really don't think I could ever 'donate' any parts of my animals.
