Maybe Controversial and Possibly Been Done Before

Yup..each to their own, whatever works for you with your breed/dog is fine..a sort of "bitsa" method..bits of this..bits of that. I have nothing against CM,and a lot of his stuff does work on my strong minded breed..BUT food reward ,once the penny has dropped does`nt half speed up the thought processes.
Continual nagging /correction just makes `em turn off their hearing aid.:o

Indeed, I also take bits of what I like from different systems, one size fits all systems never work, each dog and handler is an individual.
Some dogs need compulsion, some dogs can't handle it.

I went to one of CM's 'gigs' and I found him to be an inspirational and entertaining speaker who spoke a lot of common sense, no, he wasn't kicking dogs or stringing them up, he was showing how we approach dogs and how we do it wrong and then are surprised at the dog's reaction (the sections about the KYOOOT PUPPPPYYY! and the paramedic attending a dying patient were very educational...and hilarious :p)

Also bear in mind CM deals with the type of dog none of us are likely to run into every day.

Re clickers, I've never used one properly before now, my last two dogs did not respond to them, but I have a five month old focus-heeling with a clicker/food reward/free system...horses for courses!

Wow, lots of replies and info :) I was off out last night so only just caught up on reading it all.

I should have clarified that the bit of the CM programs that I really like and would like to ensure I follow are basically the concept of staying calm and exercise exercise exercise. At no point did I ever envision that I'd have to use the 'dominant' methods on an ickle whippy! Though I suppose those two concepts really come under the heading of 'common sense' which I like to think that I do have some of :)

Def going to give that recommended book a read (once I've found a copy to be shipped over here) and will be speaking to as many breeders/owners in the area as I can.

Just sucks that the wait is going to be too long, though at least it gives me lots of time to pick all of your brains :D
