Decided to kit out my stable with the EVA mats rather than rubber, but some companies are saying that road nails can damage them? But Equimats say they're ok - don't really want to pay over the odds for a brand so I was looking at the Mayo Mats (20mm), does anyone have these with horses with road nails? Horse is a 600kg IDx with 2 road nails in each shoe, can be a bit of a box walker at feed time. The company don't have advice on this on website snd internet searches are inconclusive! I am happy to ring and find out but would like to know other people's experiences before I shell out the money. Would traditional rubber be better?

Thanks in advance.

Mine weaves at feed time and she's created holes in the mats just inside her stable door. My mats are 6 years old though and the holes have only just become large enough to require the mat to be replaced. If you had a horse that weaved more, it might be worth considering the potential for damage to that front mat.

Ok - thanks for your replies! She doesn't weave and only mildly box walks (as in paces around a couple of times while waiting for her bucket to be put in).

I have mats that are 11 years old, and my mare is shod all round with road nails. Some small marks, but nothing major, or any replacements required.

She doesn't box walk, weave or actually do anything even remotely naughty in her stable, and she only weighs 340kg ish....

I will check my 20mm mayo mats tomorrow. I have had them down for about a month, I bought them secondhand off ebay and they were in very good condition. Mine has road nails, I can't say I have noticed any damage to them... I have to say they were an absolute joy to lay, cut and fit, I couldn't have believed how easy it would be. Just a sharp craft knife and a piece of wood to act as the straight edge... I remember my friend's OH taking an angle grinder to try and cut some rubber mats once, they only ever did the one stable!
