Mayo Mats for gateway - Would this work?

Sadly losing my yard and fields due to LO selling for housing :( Luckily found myself a field, mine to do as I want with, and right on the edge of the local forest park!

I've got a lot of mayo mats left over now, well not mayo branded, but that kind, the rigid dense foam type, not the floppy rubber type.
Would I be mad to think I could lay these down in the gateway/around the water trough, anchor them down with some big ground spikes of some kind?
In my mind, it works, they're not slippery when wet, not likely to sink like a grass mat, and provides the horses a small dry-er area in high traffic area, like a mini hard standing (god I'm going to miss my current stone hardstanding :(). Long term I'd probably look to put something more conventional in place, but I don't want to invest right away in case something doesn't work out.
But I could be missing something obvious, so sanity check please!

I think as the ground gets soft and wet they will become uneven they will split and break with horses weight on them, I think with mud and water on them they could potentially get slippery.

I would just do without for now as its coming into summer then if its working out for you invest in some mud mats ready for the winter.

Am not sure mayo type mates would work. I have jelka mats, which work out slightly cheaper than mud control mats, they are not slippy and I currently have them in a gateway and at feeding stations. They are best put down before mud forms though, rathere than on mud. They dont need spiking down.

Probably the best idea for now.

I have heard of the jelka mats, worth looking into and doing price comparisons!

I did similar at a livery yard where the stables were just on mud. I covered the yard area with rubber mats, I think it was probably the mayo type, not slippery when wet and not heavy. They worked really well.
