Okay, so if going to a well reputed dealer who specialises in the kind of horse you are after, and they offer to guarantee it for you, what does this mean? Obv. I know what it means, but do these guarantees stand for much?

Have decided no deposit!!

And re bartering, what, if say the horse was less than a grand? what would you ask off of it then on average?

I have 4 to view this w'end coming, and don't want to be farting about with people. One sounds very good but is well under the 1k mark, so would feel cheeky asking for 20% off......

I know, I'm annoying!

What type of horse are you looking for?

Im assuming with price and because you said the dealer 'specialises' in that type, then you are after a bombproof confidence giver?

If Im right PLEASE be careful, Ive bene to a few dealers who 'specialise' in these horses and have sat on some of the most dangerous horses ever, either dangerous or on deaths door!

some dealers who specialise in these horses sell 'novice rdes for first time owners' hoping they will get someone who knows nothing about horses and will basically buy a rubbish horse!
One we went to see, quiet, bombproof etc, napped like no tomorrow, when I asked her about this she said oh its because he has been in and hasnt been fed for 24 hours at all, and because he is used to going the other way!

This dealer by the way also the day before sold a spooky naughty horse to a family who had never sat on a horse and didnt know how to tack up!

I travelled 3 hours to see that horse too!

Soem dealers are great, Im just saying be careful if that is what you are after!

Can I ask what the horse is under 1k?

20% off is standard, so don't feel cheeky at all. As a dealer I generally mark all my horses up by 20% so I am expecting to be knocked down to the correct price.

I do not guarantee my horses - the guarantee is when the prospective purchaser has the horse vetted. I will hold a horse on deposit of 15% but with a set purchase date.

I'm looking for a first pony. A real quiet type, but one which will go off the LR too.
I have always been wary of dealers, but this lady has been highly recommended by several people. She seems to specialise in first, second and SJ ponies. The pony I am interested in is a shettie, good on and off the LR, traffic proof etc. Her prices overall don't seem too high, going up for the more experienced SJ ponies.
I'm not a first time owner, just never been out and bought myself before, ie never exchanged cash and done the whole vetting thing.

oh from dealers Ive encountered a guarantee usually means they will let you exchange the horse if it isnt suitable, however you need to bear in mind they may not have anything suitable or they may suddenly decide the horse you want to swap with is £1000 more than yours was! Leaving you with another £1000 to fork out, Im sure you get the gist!

Im just going on personal experience here but to me a guarantee doesnt mean anything. Thats why its important to try the horse, twice, in every situation you want him to be in when he is yours.

Thanks, I actually hoped a 'dealer' would post! I'm not sure exactly what sort of guarantee (friend told me they were guaranteed so not sure if that is right), but she said if it's not 'right' she'll take it back.

oh well if you know people have had good horses from her then dont worry too much! some dealers are absolutely fantastic, its just the rotten few that stick in peoples minds!

lol, I know what you mean. I hope to go over and have a look at what they have. I wouldnt normally touch a dealer with a bargepole, but so many people have told me to try her I thought it worth a look.

Assuming you are buying this pony for offspring then I would be wanting to buy a proven pony from a PC type home which is currently being used for the job by small children. It's an awful risk putting your child on a pony which you've bought in part (without sounding horrible) because it's cheap.
From experience, ponies which are genuinely safe off the lead rein are few and far between and generally, unless you get lucky, go for plenty money. Don't know about shetlands, so stand to be corrected.
Have you gone through the PC route, tried the PC website and spoken to some local DCs. There are often older ponies about which can go off on loan, I have one which is utterly bombproof and saintly, but 30 so she's in a loan home might be worth a try.
Having said all that, a lady in our pony club bought a pony from Brokerswood which is wonderful and cheap as chips, but I think it was an awful gamble.

Personal recommendations are good to go by.
Just get it all in writing, try him out as thoroughly as you can as if he could never go back and don't feel uncomfortable at all in haggling! It's probably expected and they will be used to it lol

I was actually looking at something which was alot pricier. I tend to be of the opinion that cost isnt an issue so long as it's the right pony. My kid's safety is paramount.

My advice is; don't trust ANY guarantee from a dealer. Go to see pony, go to see it again and if you are still not sure then go and see it again! If they are a reputable dealer then they won't mind in the slightest as they want their horses to go to the best and right homes. Come-back is a pain in the butt for most intelligent dealers and they don't need the stress of it, so it makes sense for them to sell you a horse which will do the job.

A couple of words of advice though, if it doesn't "feel" right, then walk away. And the other is, don't just look at the horse you are interested in......walk around all the other horses and see what rapport she has with them; this will give you a better understanding of what sort of person she is.

Good luck.

yeah, thats what i thought i'd do...go and just have a look round and get a feel for the place. My instincts are pretty good.

I think the guarantee depends very much on each dealer... you should ask the dealer what their guarantee entails, as one I know offers the guarantee of three months and if something happens in that time and it is not the horse for you they will take it back and find you another one. I also know a dealer who offers a couple of weeks trail (at their yard though) and then after that you are on your own.

if you are 100 per cent sure you want pony i would leavea small deposit of 50 pnds subject to it passing vet, this will at least secure
