Measureing a saddle

Can anyone please just clarify how you measure a seat on a saddle?

I say you do it from centre of Stud to the centre of saddle. I have just purchased a saddle of the internet ( not ebay ). Bought as a 17.5" saddle but when I measure it it only comes up as a 16.5". Not a happy bunny.

Yes it should be a diagonal line, not straight down the middle, but not always accurate as the studs can vary in position. I wouldn't be happy either!!
