Measuring a girth?

Silly question, but how do you measure a girth, is it measured with the buckles included or without them? answers please!!

also what do you consider the best type. Sorry if this has already been covered.
 
Girth is measured including the buckles.

As for best type, it depends what you are doing with your horse really, you can pay a decent amount for leather one which needs more looking after or a thorowgood, wipe down when muddy or chuck in the washing machine.

I have a leather one for SJ, which has elasticated humane ends on both sides or a mixture of thorowgood / Arebourne (sp??) ones for hacking in. Areborne do one similar to thorowgood but is elasticated on both sides.
 
Yes it is measured including the buckles.

I have a wintec one and its brilliant, had it over a year now and it still looks like new. Really easy to clean aswell, just wipe it over with a damp cloth.
