Measuring existing bit

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm getting completely the wrong things coming up when I search it!

Need to replace a bit - where to I measure from exactly?

Measure inside the bit rings, with the bit pulled straight if its a jointed one.

You measure the part that actually goes in the mouth so from edge to edge of the bit (ignore the rings). Does that make sense?
