Hi,
Could someone please tell me where you measure the width of you saddle? I have been told several different ways and am slightly confused now :/
thanks

You've been told several ways because there is no real way to measure the width of a saddle. I work for a small company with two brands - we have cut out triangular templates, as do most companies, that tell us how wide a tree is, but even then there is two ways of using them! One is to actually bring the triangle up so the "legs" are level with the tree points and see how the angles line up, then the other is to press it hard in underneath the front of the tree and see how many finger's clearance you get. Both ways have their uses.

The dee to dee measurement is the one that people selling used saddles privately use for convenience, but it really is a bit like licking your finger and holding it up to measure the wind, very hit and miss. And there are so many other factors that influence whether a saddle will fit - as the link above, gullet width throughout, shape and depth of panels, curve of the tree, lenth of the tree, length of the panel, width in the head of the pommel, height of the pommel, panel attachment at the pommel....the list goes on.

If selling, or buying, a saddle I'd always include a photo taken from the front with a ruler/tape measure held up across the dees then people who want to ganble on that measurement can, but others who have more of an eye can see at least in part whether the whole shape of the front is right.

The tree points a
