Royal Canin - Maxibabydog dry biscuits... however we ran out yesterday!! GRRR!!! (So stupid should have noticed) anywho... gave him some tinned food until I can get to vets to get the food today, and he LOVED the meat....

Am tempted to feed the biscuits AND some meat too....

So what meat? was thinking Chappie Puppy variety!!

What do you feed .. meat wise?

I've never fed any meat to my dogs (bar dinner left overs) as apparently lots of them contain lots of water. Although my uncle feeds his labs half a tin of meat each with their dried food. (the BIG tins!) can't remember what sort though...

I feed raw tripe & mixer biscuit.
With the large breeds you have to watch the protein content..you want gradual growth not spurts.
Check the level listed on the tin & on the biscuits.
I've used ordinary Chappie when mine have upset tums & I have no chicken & rice in.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes see this is what I was wondering... what would meat bring to the diet?

If it contains water then that IMO isn't a bad thing - I was thinking of giving it too him as he enjoyed it ssooooo much... and it would also make his biscuits go further (Not that that is an issue - but was thinking of variety for him)

[/ QUOTE ]The biscuits have low protein content.... I am aware of the protein issues, as the breeder advised of this when we got him... apparently they can get protein spots.. ?!

[/ QUOTE ]I have been giving the boys a bit of rice in their dinners too... but was just suprised at Finnys reaction to having meat!!!

ive been told that tinned butchers tripe is pretty good as tinned foods go. but id be carefull about adding stuff to a complete food, as its just that complete, the science bits done for you, and you'll be upsetting the balance. also royal canine is already high ish in protein, adding more could cause problems.

[/ QUOTE ]The vets recommended Royal Canin... after I had specifically stated that I needed a low protein diet.

I have just been to the vets and they recommended Hills or Chappie... so am off to Pets at home tonight to have a look at protein content in both.

When Morgan was a puppy she always had James Wellbeloved puppy kibble and some organic mush puppy food that was lamb and rice. She now had JW adult kibble and one tin of dog food (Tesco meat in jelly) a day. There is not a huge amount of nutrition in the tinned food, but she loves it and at least I know she is getting some fluid that way, as well as drinking water. I have used the Pedigree puppy food as it has no wheat in it and think it is fine, although lots of people throw up their hands in horror over the fact that it contains slaughterhouse waste. Given the choice, my dogs would go for that every time anyway!

in my experience, ive found vets to be lacking in knowledge on the feeding front.

[/ QUOTE ]Which I find amazing... if you have no idea about the food they shouldn't promote the product?!

[/ QUOTE ]Ahh Thanks Sooty - I only want to feed the Meat to add variety - the complete food gives him all the nutrients/etc that he needs.. he just goes mad for meat!! SO why not give it too him?!?

I have never heard of feeding low protein to a puppy. You live and learn...

[/ QUOTE ]Rhodesian Ridgebacks are sensitive to too much protein... and come out in protein spots (white dots) hence not wanting a high protein diet.

He does get protein we just have to be careful how much he gets... the amount he gets in the complete food seems to be OK though.

The product we are using is Royal Canin...

he is on Maxibabydog... but you get Minibabydog, Mediumbabydog and giantbabydog also.. each food is based on the puppies adult weight and the protein/nutrient levels are specific to adult size etc.

I feed my staffies (and the staffie pups) cooked mince and mixer biscuits, puppies get mince and complete food as they are growing!
They absolutely love it! And it's good for them!

[/ QUOTE ]Great in theory the main issue with this is the cooking!! (Lazy I know - I just don't get the time!)

HOWEVER - Can I cook it of an evening and then use the following day for breakfast/lunch/dinner?

How much do you feed?

As long as you cut back slightly on the complete diet then there is no reason not to feed a bit of tinned food for variety. Just keep an eye on what it does to his digestive system though! Some goes through faster than others...

[/ QUOTE ]This is what I shall do - I haven't increased the amount he's been getting recently (It will need increasing as he is getting that much bigger) so by adding the meat I think we should get a good balance.

[/ QUOTE ]LOL!! - Nice!! - He's pretty good and will go outside if he needs to go!! ... I think I'll look at chappie and compare others to that as that seems to be the 'blandest' choice so far!! LOL!!

My Puppy is on Nutradiet (67p from pets at home) (no additives etc) and puppy mixer... he loves it.

[/ QUOTE ]Ahh thankies!! will look out for that tonight!!

If i have time i cook it in bulk, just put it in a pan ad water, and leave to cook. But if i haven't got time or just need a small amount, i put it in the microwave for a couple of mins! The dogs love it!
How much you feed depends on your dog! My pups (before they were homed) 6-8weeks had 3 meals of it a day with about 3-4 large spoons full.
The big dogs however get more depending what there doin!

I'm really lucky

My local (holistic) pet store makes their own food, which comprises of organic turkey breast, squash, broccoli, spinach, a multi-vit, flax and elderberry.

If this (very reasonably priced) product wasn't available to me, I'd do the BARF thing.

Vets aren't the ones who know about the foods! Speak to your nurse ~ she'll be the one who will have all the bumf on it

Feed the mince raw. My dogs are fed raw meat and they have ad-lib Pedigree complete.

He's looking great by the way.

[/ QUOTE ]Ok cool... am considering feeding it raw too!!

I went to pets at home lastnight and it's a mine-field of different protein contents etc!!!

OH and I decided to stick with his biscuits and add the minced chicken!!

Do you buy the mince in a block? or do you buy it in forzen pellets?

Thanks x

Only meat to feed in the BARF diet I'm afraid.

[/ QUOTE ]Sorry am I being fick?! LOL - what is the only meat to be fed? Minced Chicken/Beef?
[ QUOTE ]
Royal Canin is about the best biscuit food you can get though, he looks good on it.

[/ QUOTE ]Thankies... it is a great food... I just wanted to add a bit of variety!!

OH shot some rabbits at the weekend so the poochies will be having a play with those later!! See how he likes the taste of that raw rabbit!!

[/ QUOTE ]Ohh that sounds tasty!! LOL!!

Finn is getting all the veggies/vits/cereal etc in his Biscuits so I'm thinking the mince is the way to go!!

[/ QUOTE ]Well I spoke to her yesterday - she advised on the 'Hills' SciencePlan feeds... but again they contain cereals which he is getting in the biscuits... hmmm such a mission!!

Thanks though!!
