I am moving down to the Newquay (RAF St Mawgan) area in the very near future and hope to bring my horse, Bertie, down once I am established with somewhere to live and have found a place to keep him. I am a keen eventer at the moment and was a bit dismayed to see that there is very little (any?) BE eventing in Cornwall. This lead me to wonder what the equestrian scene is like there; I have hunted in the past, to qualify point to pointers, and fancy some show jumping.

Can anyone offer any advice and information. Bertie lives out all year round. Any information, contacts or words of encouragement much appreciated.

Andy.

Hi... don't despair, it's not all bad:D.

I live in that very area, and run a small livery yard;) I don't compete a great deal but do help out at events etc, there are quite a few comps here, some good un-affiliated hunter trials/ODE courses and plenty of SJ and dressage venues - check out Chyverton park, Colraine, Tall Trees. Camel Valley and Newquay Riding club hold some good competitions also. Good hunting to be had too - especially North Cornwall who hunt the Bodmin Moor area.

If I can be of any help just message me :)

Cornwall is fantastic for hunting, there is some amazing country to cover- yesterday we were on the cliff tops with a sea view, quite often meet near/on the beach. As kibob says there are several good venues for dressage and sj, lots of showing shows too. The nearest BE to us is Hatherleigh (I think?) but that's a good 2 hours away, the other good one was Powderham but they axed that... there's always Chyverton and Scorrier though for xc schooling and hunter trials.

Best place I've ever lived for UNaffiliated competition, but affiliated is a lot more restricted, particularly BE. But very good horsey community all round really. Welcome!

Got to agree the hunting here is great :) And I dont compete that much but there are somegreat unaffiliated comps. The venues the others have said are great, and Smith Farm bodmin I think does quite a bit training eventers? (correct me if I am wrong!) And Bodiniel is great for XC, and Cornwall has amazing hacking nothing beets the moors!! :D

Trilby Bowden is based at Smiths Farm, very good trainer and she does come down to Chyverton Park. There are no comps held there though (smiths farm).
