I'm a recent returner, 6 months back in the saddle after an absence of 10 years and have been having regular lessons, but think having a lesson on a mechanical horse might be an idea to improve my seat and position generally.

Could anyone recommend a good place to go with a good instructor Surrey-way as I live in south London.

Thanks!

I know they have one at Aldershot barracks - used for the cowboy riding contests - certainly sorts your seat out. Best used whilst inebriated. :D

Was it helpful? I worry that half an hour might not be enough and whether I'll need more than that to really benefit!

I would try a session & then make your mind up after ;) when you are aching from one end to the other, your stomach muscles are contracting due to being worked hard.....
How fit are you?
The mechanical horse really does make you work & its ideal for position work - it will be all about you :)

I've had lessons on a mechanical horse and would highly recommend it if you have physical issues (as opposed to just learning to ride).

You will use the same muscles as on a real horse, with the advantage of having the instructor standing next to you to adjust your position if necessary in all gaits. You can also concentrate on what you are doing without having to think about controlling a horse as well.

I had a lesson at laris farm and really enjoyed it. They suggested a follow on lesson half on the mechanical horse and then half on a real horse on the lunge. I haven't ever got round to it but it seemed a logical and useful progression.

Michelle Cogger holds mechanical horse sessions at Hammerwood near East Grinstead. They are a great way to focus on your position - the room is surrounded by mirrors so there's no escaping what your faults are!

I think she has a website where you can find her details. :)
