Hi,

Can anyone help me with this as i've been trying to find information out online but struggling.

I'm wanting to apply for my C1 licence so I can drive a 7.5 ton horsebox but I suffer from PTSD.

It's not notifiable to the DVLA for my car licence unless it affects my driving.

However obviously I know the criteria is stricter for class 2.

I've read through all the literature and there is mention of psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety but not for PTSD.

Does anyone no if it's a definite failure of the medical for PTSD? I don't want to spend the money on having the medical if i've no chance.

Thanks

I can't imagine so unless it's directly related to driving.

I passed mine only a couple of years after some major anxiety and depression, I dont even remember them asking!

It depends how symptomatic you are really. If there's any chance of you not being in control of the vehicle at all times, e.g. if you are re-experiencing or becoming dissociative, it is likely to be an issue. They are much stricter with C1/D1 medicals than normal driving. It's not an automatic fail, so might be worth calling the DVLA and seeing if you can speak to the medical guys. They are quite stretched, but very good. They will probably want to see a report from your treating clinician(s) before giving you any definitive advice.

I know this isn't what you asked, but we have a lot of PTSD at work, and it's a horrible condition, but it's also over diagnosed by GPs etc., which isn't helpful to people in accessing the right treatment. It's also a very treatable condition, and if it's not complex trauma (e.g. if it's a single terrible event rather than repeated or ongoing exposure) the right treatment can have a big impact surprisingly quickly. If you haven't had a diagnosis and treatment recommendation from a proper psychiatrist (not a GP or a counsellor or a psychologist) it might be worth considering, even if you have to pay yourself. Not sure where in the country you are, but if you want any recommendations in the SE for either psychiatrists or treating psychologists who are really strong in this area, drop me a PM.

I happen to have both my D4 and D47P in front of me for my renewal!

On the medical exam report form it asks whether you have had a significant psychiatric disorder within the past 6 months, so I suppose it is open to interpretation . Also the Doctor will ask you whether there is any other medical condition that would mean you were not safe to drive.

Hope this helps.

The D4 medical has the same criteria whether for LGV C1 or LGV CE so you might as well go for LGV C
