Following on from my border terrier post, if I had my way our second dog would be larger!

Archies best friend is a large black lab bitch and when out on a walk hell ignore most dogs except bigger bitches (ie GSDs, huskies, rotties) so if you had to chose a larger breed what would it be? Think id have a tough time chosing between a ridgeback, great dane and a wirehaired vizsla.....what about you?

See I've never been a greyhound lover but met a gorgeous bitch the other day who was lovely! Im secretly hoping that when we move in his parents will give him his gsd cross back.....she's gorgeous!

Ooh,all 3 are nice breeds but having had an Irish Wolfhound in the family before (and I say this with Danes being one of my all-time fave breeds!) a 'giant' breed dog like a Dane does force you to encounter some practical difficulties; turning back on walks where he could not get over, under or through stiles, not fitting in some cars/difficulty getting in cars when older, trouble ascending & descending steeper steps, any 'accidents' in the house being huuuugggee(!),more expense at the vets (cos more of everything needed),food costs, (ignorant) people crossing the street to avoid him when he's on the lead even/being peed off when he gallops *near* them/their kids in the park (they think he's a giant killer, when he knows he's a great big doofus having a loopy run round;)),large turning circle(have you got biggish rooms, wide hallways?!?) and not forgetting drool on the kitchen top/dining table/coffee table... ;) All that aside, they are of course gorgeous (but you'll think any dog is when it's yours:)) I love RRs and we have one in the family-big dogs but a bit more practical;) and I also love all HPRs (prefer smoothies to wires-no beard smears/streaks with a smoothie but that's a teeny, tiny detail;)) as they are fun, athletic, handsome & loving dogs:) . Well,I've rambled and possibly not helped..at all...! :D

archie's a spaniel isn't he? My GSP doesn't have any more exercise than that! He comes up the yard most days and gets the ball thrown for him while I'm off round the fields. then just short toilet walks round the estate and that's it! He sleeps the rest of the day.

All the rest of the GSPs I know take about the same, although are always up for more if offered!

Have to say I prefer the wirehaired vizla to the GWP too :)

AHEM!!! Don't you have a GSP pup arriving in the next few days??!!! ;) :) :)

Oops..just seen you like a beard...I retract the beard comment! :D Ps Our GSPs have both been lovely calm dogs and not been at all nutty if they ever got less exercise than they normally had. Haven't ever had one but Weims have a bit of a nutty rep tho?? (Sorry if that's a load of rubbish,Weim fans:))

Oooo Galaxy that's interesting to know! Vene i love wolfhounds but prefer shorthair dogs. Mum bred championship greatddanes so know the breed well....massive escape artists!

I think because they will take a lot of exercise/play willingly people think they have to have it? It's certainly not been my experience (glad VV agrees!). Maybe those bred through very strong working lines may be different. But apart from being a whingey whiner (which is something they SHOULD put in the breed desciption!! Not suitable for people prone to migraines!) I find them pretty laid back (although not to Lab lazy standard! lol!)

I wouldn't know if the wirehaireds differ. Doesn't a poster on here breed HWV? I want to say it's EchoDomino???

Yes,yes I do and am soooo excited now! It's torture! My rambling was basically that IMO Danes/Wolfhounds etc are just *a bit* toooo big....;) Love em tho! However,it's GSPs all the way for me:D *whispers* I confess to being v taken with the GSPxViz crosses on here recently...a Viz would be my 2nd gundog choice if there wasn't another GSP poopy to be had in the world:D

Psst... a properly bred husky should be a lot smaller than either a GSD or a rottie. :p

If I had to go bigger than a sibe (which wouldn't be an ishoo, I like big dogs, wouldn't have anything smaller than my knee!) I would have a GSD or malinois.

Love Irish wolfhounds but couldn't deal with the short lifespan. :(

sooooo jealous!

( I am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pupI am NOT going to go and search for a GSP pup!!!!)

Ah well,if your mum bred Danes, you'll know the practicalities of having miniature-pony-sized doggies around the house:D Incidentally, one of my sisters has got a 6mth old DanexRR (an accidental mating btw) and he is gorgeous. Looks (at the mo) like a big, leggy RR!

Aah,I will do my best to post a pic soon:). Haven't had a pup for over 10years,so can't quite believe it myself-I moon over everyone's pup pics on here (any breed!) and am pinching myself that it's me now! OP,I concur with Galaxy-I don't think GSPs need an excessive amount of exercise-mine are essentially fairly lazy dogs but happily step up to whatever you can throw at them but no 'mentalist' crazy issues if that's not a lot....they just hog the Aga a bit more instead:D

Aga?? Surely you mean the SOFA and/or BED??!!!! ;) :)

There is sometimes a bit of commando-style-flat-bellied-'you-haven't-really-noticed-me-I'm-not-really-here' edging onto the sofa,it has to be said... ;) Our bed is quite high,so that requires an all-out leap-often too much like effort for our oldies:D

Its not a load of rubbish! Weims are nutty, highly strung, stubborn and a general pain in the butt lol :p I love mine cos she's mine but never ever again, i try and warn everyone how hard work they are and push them towards the much easier and calmer vizsla :D

My next dog will be a GSP! A friend for Rosie :D OH said don't you know how big they are and how much exercise they need... well yes but we do live on a 150 acre farm :D I just love them, and saw a demo at a county show this year with them working, was brilliant.

I'd love another pointer. Or a vizsla. But not allowed, so maybe a daxie. Haha. I agree though, one big run down the horses, sometimes two, and my dogs snooze most of the day. But yes boy can they whine. Sooo annoying. And they like the sound of their bark. And they shed a lot. Hang on, why do I want another?!? Lol

you have a spaniel don't you? They really don't require any more exercise than one of those!! Get a tennis ball and a launcher and on a naughty day I have exercised Harley is 20 minutes!

Because they're fab!!

ha ha! This forums IS going to be taken over by HPRs. We will rivaling the GSDs and spaniels soon!

GSDs for me! I have developed a soft spot for Rotties but I think the health issues (and resulting high premiums for insurance) would make me think twice, emotionally and practically. It'd cost me more to insure a single Rottie the same age as my two, than both my dogs (GSD and Rottie x - insurance just class her as 'large crossbreed') combined!

GSD for me too, and would prefer them to be classed as medium to large :p - they're not supposed to be big boned/heavy/giant IMO.

Only other dogs that would float my boat would be Beauceron or Dutch Herder but they are both mean to be quite hard-headed personality wise. And I do like the look of Komondors but I would not like the coat!

I knew two Beaucerons- they were lovely, sweet girls. Not hardheaded at all:) Lived to pretty good old ages too(I think 12 and 13) for big dogs, tho cancer finished one off sooner than expected:( They were litter mates.
