I continue to rise but push forwards more with the hips. I tend to collect just before the medium then soften slightly with my hands, leg on as i rise and drive slightly with the hips...need to have a good seat to achieve a good medium

you can still do it rising. the aids arnt much different. lift your belly button up and push up towards their ears, it works on most lol. just make your trot bigger and more expressive without letting the horse run!.

I think you should continue rising as sitting is more useful when your trying to do small circles or collect the horse up for lateral work eg. Medium trot is inbetween working and extended trot and requires the horse to work with increased impulsion than he would in working trot thus taking longer, rounder steps.
To do this you want to create more power and impulsion with your legs and seat, but no more speed so keeping a consistent contact on the reins, not throwing them away as the horse lengthens his whole frame whilst staying in an outline. Hope this helps
