Hello, I am needing to buy a medium weight turnout for my Connemara gelding. I have always gone for Rambo or amigo rugs as don't like leg straps and they always seem to last and fit well. Last year I bought him the amigo mio due to the reasonable price but found it constantly slipped and just wasn't a good fit compared to previous amigos and ended up coming off in the field and being destroyed! Any ideas on rugs without leg straps that fit well without costing the earth?

Thanks in advance! X

I have a Mark Todd heavy weight and really rate it. Others on the yard have multiple Mark Todds and also really like them. Don't know if that helps but I find they fit well and are pretty robust. They do come with leg straps but I only use mine with a fillet string and it's never budged an inch.

I have tried various makes over the years and have always found that you usually get what you pay for, premier equine rugs have definately come out tops - old mare has had one for 5yr and it virtually good as new, just bought my new one the same (managed to get it in the sale :) ) They are really tough and hard-wearing and also deep fitting so suit my connies, not too expensive either and think they still have a sale on

I am a huge fan of horseware but the amigo mio's seem to be quite cheap and that's reflected in the quality. I have a horseware amigo medium weight that is exclusive to 'mole valley farmers' and is cheaper than other versions the tack shops have. Very sturdy and good fit! Might be worth having a look on their website :)

Might get shot down here... Derbyhouse!
They are BOBOF at the minute :D:D
My highland has them in 6ft, never rub slip and are really waterproof for a while! got mine for £33 :D WOO!
Ruggles are also rather fabby! Just the colours aren't "Vibrant" .. doesn't matter when they all get cover in mud .. argh.
The shires tempest rugs are brilliantly cheap too.. I have an un-used one (so far) it seems lovley, fits like a glove and I doubt it'll shift about :D

I've got a Shires Highlander and love it! It's a bit too big for him but the whole rug is lovely. It has leg straps but I just take one off and make the other a fillet string :D

I have a Weatherbeeta medium and heavy T/O for my Connemara and really love them :) So far no rips, good and waterproof, fit him like a glove, the medium has an integrated neck cover (is detachable on the heavy) and I love the tail flap as it's a Landa freestyle-type and it's a really nice design. I think the leg straps are detachable as well? xx

Have you tried the Amigo 1200D rug? Much better than some of the new cheaper rugs Horsewear are bringing out IMO. Failing that, I'd also recommend PE. They've a sale on ATM too!!! :D

I think there is a difference in opinion re rugs depending on the horse.

I would recommend premier equine, recently got one in sale and i'm completly converted. Quality is vvv good and all my future rugs will be from them once they need replacing.

I currently have an amigo 1200d medium, which is actually excellent quality for £39.99 i paid for it! But not the best fit on my boy and it is looking a little sorry for itself now!

My friend has all Mark todd rugs which she swears by for her skinny thoroughbred but i find they are not generous enough for my boy.

I think i've said a few times on here now but i have a serious dislike for my 2 derby house rugs!!!

I'm another weatherbeeta landa fan, I have two with a full neck and one with a detatchable. They are all the freestyle versions which you can choose to remove the leg straps if required, but they are elasticated which I like, never any slippage issues.

However, I am also a fan of the shires tempest rugs - they are great value for money.

It really depends on the shape of your horse - the w/b rug didn't fit a narrow chested pony I had well (TB type) and bagged and gaped but the shires did fit; my other pony is broad in the chest and the w/bs fit her perfectly, no rubs.

Thanks for all your replies. Seems like the premier equine rugs are getting a good review so might try them for a change. Have always gone for horseware it's just such a shame the quality of the mio has really let them down. Off to hunt for the best price now!

The Mio is their super-budget range though to be fair. The 1200d Amigo is a much better rug and is of course more expensive.

Give Premier Equine a go if you like, they are very popular on here. I seem to be one of the few people who wasn't impressed with them as the rug I bought from them wasn't waterproof... or even showerproof.

If money was no object, I'd go for a Rambo. :)

I'm about to buy some rugs for my new boy (if he passes his vetting!) and have been debating what brand to go with but reading this I think I will try Premier Equine - so thanks :)

I use Amigo's on my connie to as the fit is really good but always go for the 1200 as they seem the best. Next best i have a 150g Mark Todd which is good but a bit big round the shoulders. :)

Well after looking at all the options have purchased a 1200d amigo Bravo 12, so hoping it will be as good as my previous older amigos. Seemed a pretty good price in the sale from ride away as well. :-) Was going to go premier equine but couldn't seem to find the right fill and size I was after, maybe next time!

I also have a Connemara gelding and he is in a necked medium weight wetherbeeta landa freestyle with leg straps but they are detachable. Fits his really well and he has been using it for 2 years with no problems, defiantly a good buy!
