Well what a rollercoaster week this has been.

A week ago today my old Poppy dog was peacefully put to sleep at home. An hour or so beforehand a vet friend of mine called me to ask me to rehome a dog which was in a very bad way. She is a black GSD, 4 years old; anyway I said yes I would. Well this didn't work out as the owner of the dog would not give up ownership of the dog so the SPCA was going to have to be involved and I thought that this was either going to be a no-go, or a long haul, so we decided to go out and look at some puppies. We went to look at a litter of GSD's but there was nothing which made me want to take any of them home so we left and returned home. However in the afternoon we went to see another litter of pups; this time they were Akbash dogs. We had researched this breed 2 years ago when we ended up getting Daisy instead because we thought the dogs were too big to have around my old Poppy. Well this time with not having Poppy any more, and having previously done all the research we thought we would go and speak with the breeder to find out if this was the right dog for us. Well we decided that yes this felt right.

One of the little girl's chose us immediately and the decision was made to take one. She is the most delightful little creature. She portrays characteristics that Poppy had as a puppy but I had long forgotten them, and to see these coming out in this little puppy is heartwarming.

Clover is 8 weeks old. She is an Akbash and although she is tiny now she doesn't appear to know that she is tiny! She will be a very big girl when she grows up, they are similar to Pyrennean Mountain Dogs.

Anyway enough chattering; please meet Clover.

A bit of an ironic twist comes into the tale though......

Vet friend called me on Sunday to say that they felt that the owner of the black GSD was on the verge of being heavily pushed into signing the dog over to them......so I will hear this week whether she will be coming to live with us or not.

Aaaaaaaawwwwwww

god she is cute!!!

I remember your posts about this breed when you first went out to canada and was really intrigued by them - not ever having seen one before.

Tia I think Poppy would approve of Clover.....and I see she is managing to get grubby already!!!
grin.gif

Spaniel, I don't believe in reincarnation......but if I did....then Clover is Poppy! Poppy would very much have loved and looked after this puppy.

Clover is just what the doctor ordered, she really is.

Thank you PG and Rema - I think so too.
smile.gif

Aww how sweet is she? I love the last piccie. She looks like a floppy teddy
laugh.gif

I also hope all goes well with the GSD bitch. She would be very lucky to have a home with you

What a super cutie - great pics!!!

Its odd when you recognise characteristics that you'd forgotten: one of my dogs is going to be just like my old dog, I'm sure the only reason it hasn't already happened is the influence of her sister - its like she's heard us talk about our wonderful L and is trying to be just like her, even the bad bits!
grin.gif

I am so sorry to hear about Poppy, but your new pup is so gorgeous.
grin.gif

Just what you need...a white dog that likes mud! What a soft lovely baby, she's a complete sweetie and I'm sure we're all glad to see you have a new friend to put a smile back on your face. And good luck with the GSD when that arrives

LOL that's what I was thinking

How often are you going to have to bath him?

Fantastic Tia, you'll never replace dear Poppy but a little puppy does an awful lot for a broken heart! xx

An ideal choice for you at your place but make sure you stock train her early, so she 'knows' the goodies from the baddies! Hope she doesn't eat any of your clients - they're ferocious guard dogs!
Know people with Karabash, which for their size, (like Akbash), are incredibly fast reacting & moving & have been clocked by cars at pushing 30mph, which is greyhound speed!

You shouldn't have any trouble with coyotes anyway, they'll keep pretty much anything at bay! (Or run it down & shred it! lol) They've been hugely successful in areas where fencing isn't an option & there have been several articles on Akbash & Karabash being used to patrol Angora goat herds etc., with predation by coyotes & wolves going down to zero almost instantly!)

Cool dog, great choice!

Sorry I don't have loads of time to be on here right now as we are right in the middle of hay-making....you know how long those days are
crazy.gif
.... and we're not even half way through yet.

Thank you everyone, she really is a lovely little puppy.

Sooty - that is Daisy's hole that she is lying in
smile.gif
. Clover's hole is dinky in comparison but no doubt her's will get bigger the larger she gets
grin.gif
.

JAK - yes they are pretty competent dogs aren't they! I remember the first ones we ever met, about 5 years ago and I remember when we were going around the people's farm we kept seeing "bits" of animals lying around the woods
crazy.gif
. Of course back then I knew nothing about Akbash dogs, hadn't even heard of them to be honest, but they certainly did intrigue me.

We are aware of the problems that some people can have with Akbash dogs though and we know that we have to continually socialise her throughout her life otherwise we could run into trouble with her. I think she will be good though as she is very good with all of the people who have been up to the farm and she gets on well with the 2 JRT's from next door and obviously our dogs are great with her. I think she is starting to get the idea that people are allowed on our property as she is now accepting them, possibly because my other dogs are very friendly dogs.

She has met the cats (which she adores!) and has met the horses although I don't allow her in the pasture fields just yet as she is so small and trusting. I don't think it will be long before we can though as she is noticably growing already! The horses all know she is here as I have been making a point of at least a couple of times a day I will walk her along all the herds fencelines and they have come over to sniff her so by the time she is allowed in the fields they will be very familiar with her.

Socialising shouldn't be too much of a problem for us as we always have people at the farm so she should be fine with the constant comings and goings.

Probably the main reason we decided to go for her though, is that it will be such a pleasure being able to go up into our woods and not have to worry anymore about any coyotes/wolves attacking my other 2 dogs! It really does get a bit tiresome when we meet them and they go for my dogs - well our Clover should put an end to all of that.

Clover's mother was a very nice dog; showed all the typical traits of Akbash mind you, she was a little suspicious of us when we turned up, however she was gently friendly. The father was just as stunning as the mother, however he is not socialised at all and just lay watching us from afar the whole time we were there. The owner told us he had only ever touched the father twice in the 6 years of the dogs life, so he is a true working Akbash.

We are hoping to keep Clover in a family type environment and we hope that she doesn't have stronger urges to go off and work rather than remaining with us at the farmhouse. Time will tell but I have read a tonne about trying to keep them as part of your family and to accept strangers without eating them
blush.gif
, and we are starting out as we mean to go on and so far we have been pleasantly pleased at how well she is reacting to all the people and dogs coming onto the farm.

She is already free-range like the rest of our dogs and she has never wandered off, has chosen her hole outside and always returns to that after her occasional moments of movement. She does however watch everything that goes on; I can see her learning constantly about what is expected of her and we have been very clear about everything so far, so if she continues down this route, then she will be a happy dog and we will be very happy owners.

For those unfamiliar with the breed, here is what they look like as adults:

Lovely. I am so pleased that you have found another dog to give a wonderful home too. Great name too.

I DON"T BELIEVE IT! She's in a hole already!
smile.gif

These really are super dogs, we have a neighbour along the road who has one, once he had been introduced he was fine with us and is fabulous with their young child.

She is gorgeous, but don't envy you trying to keep her white. I hope you get the GSD too, it sounds like she deserves a wonderful home. I know what you mean about seeing Poppy in Clover. When I lost Chaka I thought her daughter had none of her ways and characteristics but I am seeing them all the time now. In Buffys case I think her mum had such a strong character she suppressed Buffys personality but now it is coming through. It is a bittersweet moment when they do something that reminds you so much of your oldie isn't it.

Wow she is gorgeous, what a beautiful girl.

And what a fascinating breed too, Im sure she wil make a wonderful dog. Ive enver heard of the breed before, but love big dogs!
grin.gif

Tia! I am so happy for you!

What a darling pup! I remember a cartoon I used to watch as a child about a boy named Sebastian and his giant white dog that was a Pyrenean Mountain Dog.(cannot remember the name of the show...will go and look for it online)
I always wanted a dog like that!
I am wishing you many many years of joy with your new puppy on your beautiful farm! WHAT a LUCKY puppy!
smile.gif

LOL!! I remember that Jade!
smile.gif

I think Pyreneans are somewhat more soppy than Akbash dogs. Akbash are certainly not for the faint-hearted dog owner, LOL!!

She is gorgeous Tia, she really is. I can't wait to pop up and see her, although I am thinking sooner rather than later.... I don't fancy meeting her for the first time fully grown - I like my limbs where they are thanks!!!!!

Qr -

Thanks everyone - she really is a little star and I am besotted!

Emma; you will be fine. I have every confidence in this dog that she will turn out exactly like all of our other dogs. Look at Daisy; born of the most viscious bitch around and the most aggressive dog in the area....and yet she is the most delightful dog ever. We're nice to our dogs - we don't molly-coddle them but we are very kind in a clear-cut way so there are never any grey areas; I just know that Clover will turn out like the rest.
smile.gif

course she will turn out like the rest! the nature of the dog somes from its owner and the way they bought it up...its not always the breed taking over
grin.gif
how big will Clover grow? Like compared to other breeds?? x

"the nature of the dog somes from its owner and the way they bought it up..."

.....err not always
shocked.gif
....good luck with your new addition ....as you know, these are very strong willed dogs and certyainly NOT for the faint hearted.

(still think that Daisy is part Groenendael which is why she has that lovely nature LOL
