The latest addition to our family :D

After much discussion and research and speaking to his breeder and others who have Malamutes, we finally settled on this little guy. He is an absolute pleasure to own and is quite the character. He is 13 weeks old now, has had all his innoculations and is now being walked - I'm losing weight by the day which is great :D He starts puppy school on the 30th June and is pretty much toilet trained with just the odd accident when we dont move fast enough to let him out. He is great with the kids, has met the horses (Arion was completely fascinated with him) and is doing great with his socialising with other dogs while we are out and about.

He is purely a pet - I have no plans to show or work him - he will be a much loved member of the family for many years to come although I might do some agility with him just for fun and to give him something to do and further his training.

He is growing so fast, vet says he is going to be a very big Malamute but his daddy was huge so we knew that was a possibility. I look forward to giving you regular updates on his progress here on All About Dogs :)
 
Aaw lovely pup. Just a word of warning, I am not sure what you mean by being walked but pups of big breeds like malamutes should not have too much exercise whilst they are young, they have a lot of growing to do and you can put too much strain on their soft bones. I am sure the breeder explained all this to you but thought it best to mention, hope you don't mind. Good luck with his training classes.

Yes, thank you, we are not over walking him. His breeder did say that for the first year he would not need a lot of walking and we are mindful of that - he gets no more than 30 mins a day broken down one 15 mins walk in the morning and one 15 mins in the evening with the kids. - I am just not used to walking at all - hence 30 mins a day is new exercise for me so Im toning up and its helping my diet lol :D
 
He's lovely.

When he is 18 months old, you can get him a rucksack.

It is a much more civilised way to bring the shopping home.

Yeah, its funny as hell too - he will be running and will try and stop and his back end just keeps going so he does this kind of mid air flip and boing thing and then jumps up and looks at me as if to say "what the hell just happened" :D

Yeah as MM says, no need to rush the exercise at this age, he's a baby, wait til he's older and then you'll see the pounds fall off, you'll be half the woman you used to be :p
 
Not sure how popular this idea is but my Ute's breeder feeds her pups frozen chicken wings a it helps the muscles that make their ears stand up to develop.

I still feed it as a treat, 2 years later.

He will always come to the call of "frozzy chops"!

Gorgeous boy wheres he from? Will probably no doubt know his breeders, whos is mummy and daddy?

I can remember when my little lady was that small :) she now weighs in at 40kg

To be honest I wouldnt walk him more that 15 minutes a day full stop working his mind will tire him out just as much think of 5 minutes for every month of age. My mentor in the breed has a 10 month old bitch as she still will not walk her anymore than two miles a day as shes a big girl instead she does a lot of clicker training and heal work which completely knackers her out
 
We got him from Malderston in Ayrshire Cyrus - lovely couple with some very wonderfully natured dogs - we met mum, she was a lovely girl, her name is Maldertson Dream Attraction (Dyce) and daddy is Koromadel Mr Brightside (Storm). Chayo Blue Thunder is his great grandfather and he has Tuvaurat and Hawkams for grandparents - quite nice lineage from what I can gather from my own research into his pedigree.

He starts puppy classes on the 30th, that was the first starting date I could get after all his innoculations were all done - I have started with the basics, sit, stay and heel work and he is proving to be quite the little student - keen to please and seems to love learning. He does tend to listen to me more than he does my OH, think it must be my ex army voice full of command and bossiness. We had one night of crying, the second night he was here, and a week of 5am puppy alarms which were fun, but he has settled well and is sleeping till 6.30am when I get up and give him his breakfast.

We will reduce him to a morning walk of 15 mins and add 10 mins to his garden training as we call it.

And ohhhh do we have related doggies? That would be so cool :D
 
They are related :D hes a lovely mix some really nice show and working lines in there you sooooo need to work him pretty please :D

Korbans daddy Storm is by Dankatchas Hot Fuss Over Koromandel whos Sire is Keikewabics Rusty Tundra Baron at Shepherdsway who is Locos daddy :D

My daughter would love to work him - she runs around the garden with him shouting "Mush" at him lol - she is only 11 though so she has a way to go - according to her she is going to buy 10 Korbans and make a team and cross the Arctic with them all - this is what I get for letting her watch Snow Dogs :D

I could be tempted to do some showing with him :D Dont have the first clue about showing dogs though but have already had a look at the Alaskan Malamute Club UK schedule for 2010 and might actually take a wee wander down and watch proceedings :D

We`ll be there with Madam, she has her first show on July 1st eeep have finally been talked into it by breeder and mentor, if she enjoys it (and keeps all four paws on the ground) she`ll be shown at the mal club show

You have SKC at the royal highland show ground on the 28/29 of august 29th (sunday) is working group day and there is mal classes if your not far away you should take a look :D

Tis fab to have another mally owner on here

So how does one go about getting a breed mentor then? Is there a list somewhere? Might be useful for tips on shows and so on - he would be a week shy of 6 months end of August - is that too young - Im not far from Edinburgh at all :)

Yes, Im so glad there is a fellow Mal owner on here, and an expert in your field also by the looks of it :D
 
Yeah it will be for that show, 6 months is the youngest a pup can be for a show so you could show him at the AMCUK club show :D
In the meantime find your nearest ringcraft class and take him along its great for socialisation and it will teach you and him what is expected of you both in a show ring, its also a fab place to find out about any local shows that he can try his new skills in.
Unfortunately there is no list of mentors, I was just quite lucky that mine lives but 20 minutes away from me and has become a good friend she and my breeder are the first I turn to if I have any problems at all with madam.
You should visit some rallies (races) over the winter and meet some other mally owners you never know you may just find your mentor there :)
I`d love to say one day i`ll be an expert but I learn something new about the breed everyday, Korban will be your greatest teacher :D
 
Thank you Cyrus - I was talking to OH about possibly doing some showing last night and he has reluctantly agreed to it so long as I dont turn into one of these crazy dog people who he compares to people who put their children into beauty paegents :D
