New pony (sect C) has settled in really well, he's a good boy with nice manners and a credit to my firend who has rehomed him. It's such pity he's not ridden as he has lovely paces. Long story but basically rescued because he had landed with a family who bought him as a four yr old as a childs pony and were too novicey to cope with him. He had become very unruly and they were terrified of him so he was going to be pts. He's a lovely friendly chap who just needs clear boundaries, nothing nasty about him but I think he's a bit unpredicatable to ride.

I'm not used to looking at chunky ponies so he looks quite fat to me, but running my hands over him, I can feel his ribs and he doesn't have a huge gutter. Like many welsh ponies, he does have a big neck. I'd put him at a 4, as I think he needs to lose some weight but I think if I manage his grazing carefully, he will lose weight withoutv2opjUDl_rjGHAHwQwRKPlFI2OklIPVR5ztN3A7v58Im5r-m3udkhmW1Rxh3R_9IvMf7Ah9HPOH_7LTwtiYulOl2esRics...jpgUmfvQpWJxo96wc6_3plzlaU53U8j0j0v6p8Ty4_vl9s_IgtrlAuRbnc5ho7-5JknvXeT8vHNny3AeAdGE8QwZjaUcZDjvL...jpg being miserable. He's in overnight currently and I think with the stallion being over the road, I won't switch them round. Your thoughts, please.

How big is he? Could you ride him or lunge him? Exercise is the best way of getting his weight down along with restricted grazing. He is a nice section c and a lovely colour!

I don't have any tack for him and he's unpredicatable to ride and I'm 70, so no. I'm not sure how he is to lunge but I can find out. He's currently in from 18.00 to 08.00 on soaked hay, double netted as he's a companion pony and needs to be on the same regime as my mare, so to some extent, he is on restricted grazing. Also the grazing is Ok but not that lush, never been fertilized and is well grazed in the summer.

Yes green passport, my friend still has it and is due to drop it in, so not sure of his breeding but I think he's quite well bred and is very smart when he moves but like so many welsh ponies, he's an adults ride but has some very ingrained behavioural issues and is not good on the roads, so if I want to xercise him, it will have to be lunging. I've got a grazing muzzle from little fatty but I doubt it will fit him unfortunately.

I used to have a LLanarth section C, Llanarth Windell, same colour, many years ago. Also interested in the breeding. Lovely but he definitely needs to lose weight.

I've had a few C's in the past, also interested in breeding. Had a fab palomino out of a D mare and by Colbeach Cavalier (B) another was a half brother on dam side to Fourwinds Flyer as well as others, but I'm a sucker for barbie ponies 😂

Just realised I put confo score when I meant condition score. Drrrrrr....... I wasn't using the Henneke scoring system 0-9 I was using the 1-5 system the Blue Cross use, so 4 is basically FAT but his ribs can be easily felt and he doesn't have a big gutter, so in my book he is just about the right side of 4 but needs to lose weight.

Completely agree, from the photos he looks the right side of 4 (3.5?). Anyway if he was mine I'd be careful without doing anything drastic if that makes sense. Can you section him a bit of that field off?

The pic is a bit deceptive, he's actually in a triangle and because it's been over grazed (liitle Fatty was kept on it last year) it's not that lush and is very weedy in parts. Rose is also in another section but can be quite near to the pony if she wishes and there's a big area which I can move the fencing into as required. I did find it very difficult with Little Fatty as he was much smaller and very difficult to keep behind electric fencing, this pony is much more respectful but I do like to try to keep the balance right so they feel they have enough to eat without having to break out. These native ponies just don't need a lot to eat, we've had connies and part welsh in the past but they've never got fat as they have always had loads of work, just a shame this pony can't be ridden as I'd love to have someone to hack out with!

Nice pony it is a shame if he can't be ridden do you know what it is he does that makes him unrideable? No disrespect to your friend but sometimes some peoples idea of naughty I am not riding that! can often be no problem for some people

Nope but my friend will ride ponies and horses that I would not. This pony has come to me as a companion not as a ridden pony.

Looks sweet, same kind of confirmation as my guy but he’s welsh x. Just watch that crest! Perhaps a sign of something underlying as a lot of welsh’s have, but i wouldn’t want him to get any fatter.

Does he have the same needs as your mare if so he is a lovely companion and has no aspirations to do anything else. If she needs a lot of grub then he may not be the ideal companion as lovely as he is as he does need to lose a fair bit of weight. In those circumstances I would again suggest a long thin track to keep him moving water at one end and food at the other works for my fatties

If you would like something to hack out with you and Rose doesnt need her grazing restricted he doesnt sound ideal. Is he a permanent member or just interim while you find something else? Either way hes very pretty and I can see why you have gone for him! :)

No I don't really need something to hack, I'd need to find someone to come to ride with me which would be nice as I hate hacking alone! For the time being I am keeeping him in the same field as Rose but separate. His area is actually quite small but I could give him a strip rather than the triangle he's in currently. I've had him as a companion before in 2017 and got him down to a proper weight but sadly his owner needed him back. The big advantage with him is that he is happy to be on his own when I go away for training and I can take Rose away and leave him out but he doesn't mind. Companions like this are very hard to find. he's also quite polite so my OH can handle him if I am away. He is rather porky but i did say that in my OP and really I was asking if people agreed with my condition scoring of 4 (stupidly wrote confo!) but the helpful posters have taken this a bit further. I don't think he's very good on the roads or I might consider ride and lead however, we do met some big stuff on our little lanes!

This means he is worth his considerable weight in gold I have one just the same that is evil and would have been shot by now most places but is a great companion for those reasons even if he isnt easily handled by others. He is a good 4 on the 1-5 scale so as you say he needs to lose some He is a lovely pony but for his sake he needs to lose to at the highest 3 or better still 2.5 as he wont be doing anything to assist his weight

Hi for those who asked about his breeding, he is Wyebrook Rhun ap Idris, sire Abaraeron Idris, out of Cadfach Rhosyn. A quick google suggests he is well bred. I stopped off to get his passport and he's good to lunge, so I've come home with his bridle and good intentions. His owner got him going quite well after a very difficult start but his go to if upset is to rear, he can also buck. She feels he needs a really competent lightweight adult rider who can ride him through his strops but he's 15 now and his behaviour is really very well ingrained, she's happy for me to have as long as I need a companion and then she'll have him back. So I think I just need to get some fat off him!
